Nintendo Revolution: The Facts

Joystiq reports what they know about the Nintendo Revolution. If what they say is credible, which I believe it is, then the Revolution might be the best new console. Here are the details:

Release is sometime in 2006.
Prototype shown is larger than final unit.
Nintendo is still determining final colors for the console.
All-Access Gaming, which refers to backwards compatibility to 20 years of Nintendo games, NES, SNES, N64. We don’t know particulars of how it’ll be accessed or what, if any, the cost structure might be.
Downloadable to 512MB of flash memory.
SD memory card slot.
Wireless controllers.
Two USB 2.0 ports.
Built-in WiFi.
WiFi used to interface with the DS.
DS likely to enhance future games.
Self-loading optical drive that will play 12cm Revolution discs and smaller GameCube discs
Self-contained attachment for playing media content, including DVDs.
No controller was shown. So even though the box looks a lot like the one leaked over the weekend, the accompanying controllers were not presented. So was it a leak, or a really good guess?

Engaget also covered the E3 Nintendo Revolution event.

I like the looks of the Revolution, but do you have to use the one handed controller? Can you use the regular two handed? Wireless?

    Please reply.

Here’s a great article covering the Nintendo Revolution controller in great detail. It looks like it might cost you some extra cash if you want something above and beyond the regular, 1-handed controller that comes with the revolution:

“An expansion port on the bottom of the unit [1-handed controller] allows for add-on hardware to compliment this “remote controller” (our word for it, not Nintendo’s), like a second controller piece Nintendo demonstrated that comes equipped with an analog stick and two trigger buttons (currently labeled Z1 and Z2, for those of you keeping track). When the two controller pieces are attached, the so-called ‘Nunchaku’ configuration (the two bits are connected by a short cord) can work similarly to current controllers, just with the second analog stick replaced by actual movement of the Revolution controller. Nintendo also mentioned that the controller stick could be slipped inside other, more conventional controller shells, dance mats, bongos, or other peripherals.”

The Nintendo Revolution will supposively have a hand-free controller ( motion censors watch your every move and apply it to your t.v. ). Thats why they named it “revolution”. I hear the graphics are barely better then Nintendo Gamecube, but if they do have hand-free controllers then it will probably be the hottest thing on the market ( or so I think ).

Don’t be to afraid to purchase the Revolution because of sorry graphics. I’ve seen the graphics on some simulated games and, while they’re not in HD, they do deliver. I’ve been researching this for a long time and I have also seen that the price in the U.S. will be $199. A major deduction from the XBox 360 and the PlayStation 3, which will be $399. The controller is Nintendo’s ace in the hole. Its concept is synonymous with the console, revolutionary. It’s just a matter of time before Sony steals it, like they stole Wi-Fi and the handheld system. Still, the Revolution should be the most surprising of the next-gen systems, and Nintendo should be able to pull it off.

  5. David Cutting says:

If the nintendo revolution has the 3rd of the graphics power of the xbox 360 and does not use high definition TV and uses normal TV which has a 3rd less pixels.
When playing an xbox 360 on a normal tv and a nintendo revolution on a normal tv, they will have the same graphics power.

Because the xbox 360 will be processing pixels that you will not see unless you have hd tv which is in the minority.
