this is what it will be set to if you pick 10M… i changed the rate to 150000 and then rebooted… steam then did a quick update and i started to download again but it was only a little faster about 37K i went into steam and looked at the internet connection speed and there was nothing in the box so i thought i’d try the 10M again and to my surprise steam now maxed at 150K which is what i should do on a 1.5Mbps connection.. it’s still a bit flakey and varies between 38K and 150K but it’s haeps fater than it was before and in the time it took me to go back to this site and post this comment i’ve downloaded about 48MB worth of data from steam..

This actually worked really well for me. went from abt 3kb/s to abt 25-30kb/s. And if you are iffy about deleting files like me, this is your best bet. Thanks Rick!

Wow… It’s been almost four years since this thread started, and yet still, Valve has yet to fix its “Steam” program. There’s a simple concept valve isn’t grasping: If you provide ****** service, people don’t buy your products. Now, you would think that a company so eager to take our money would realize that if your games are user friendly, you’ll sell more product therefor, more money. But nevertheless, valve trudges along, most likely making less and less money each day. And somewhere, the ignorant, incompetant, *** hole that has created, and yet to fix, one of the most hated, bug ridden, and downright terrible programs to date, is wondering “…well, whats going on?” And for the utter pain that that man has put each and every one of us through, he deserves a punishment worse than death. I hope you live forever, creator of steam. Thik about it.

Okay. This may not apply to everyone, but I was having this problem while downloading GTA4 and Left4Dead… I poured over this entire (Nearly… but what can I can say? It’s three year thread… I’m only human…) thread looking for a solution. Well. A buddy of mine tipped me off that I was in a skype call with. This may not apply to everyone, but it sure saved my ***. If any of you are using an Nforce Motherboard, make sure the FirstPacket service is disabled (Found in your Nvidia Control Panel), or if you have it on and prefer to use it, make sure Steam is on your high priority list. Otherwise, that FirstPacket service is saying, “Steam? What’s that? Not important.”

I don’t know how many of you that will help (Hopefully someone.) Helped me, anyway. I was getting a measly 18-70 kb/s. Now I am up to 350+.

Its ******* ****, i have redownloaded the ******* game 5 times now, 400 kb/s is ****, i have 100/100 mb and should at least top speed 2 mb/s, **** server valve have, I will never buy another game from valve in my ******* life.

this is BS steam. If any one who works there reads this please tell your boss or whatever and ask,no tell,no put a gun to there head and force them to get some speed downloading from all the cash were giving you.

My download right now is running at 40 kb/s. I'm only downloading one thing. Does anyone know how to fix this? My connection is stable and speedy in game.

for me if i click start download it will start downloading for a few seconds then say download starting….ive done this enough to get to 42% plz help

Wow, that's still fast. I get max 160 KB/s with my 1 mbps connection.
