Half Life 2 Steam Installation Too Slow!

Posted in Benchmarks, First Person Shooter, PC Games by VGB Admin on October 31st, 2005.

I am checking out Half Life 2 over Steam, and the installation is too slow! Take a look at these download speeds:

Half Life Steam SLOW

I am getting ~500KB/s on a connection that regularily sustains 1.2 MB/s. What gives, Valve? Don’t have a great online content distribution network, or what?

And it looks like you’re already downloading it. You’ve never played HL2 before? 500kb/s sounds pretty good to me! :-)

  2. PallamRhetor says:

I’m currently downloading CS Source for the second time (new hard drive in computer, and not by choice), and I’ve been loading at 25-30KB/sec for THREE HOURS now. I have 28% loaded, hot damn; I should be able to play some time around the end of this week.

  3. Jonathan says:

I’m having the same problem downloading hl2 from steam… My connection usually downloads at about 500KB/s but its only dl’ing hl2 at about 50KB/s… I think they just need more bandwidth on whatever server holds those files…

  4. john says:

Yeah I just reinstalled HL2 and CS and I am getting like 70kb/s, I really think Steam needs to get some faster servers. I’m on cable and I would much rather get a torrent and add it to the directory then wait 153 minutes.

  5. Loren says:

    Don’t complain you big sissy,

I’m getting 1.2kbps on a DSL connection. ****! I need to figure out how to freekin fix this

  6. adam says:

from the screenshot there good dl speeds i trhink, my internet is fucked up the last few days since i have to share my internet with 2 other people so the max i can dl at is 30kb/s >_> i left my comp on all day yday and it only did 10%… >_>

  7. jonathan says:

Well count yourselfs lucky i have a 8 meg connection and i am getting wopping speeds of 8 bytes a second lol

  8. Kringlan says:

yeah seriousely, whats up with your bitchin.
first of all, i’ve got 100mbits, you dont have to do the maths yourself, i could theoretically download 12,5 mbs/s… 500kbs is not slow… i get 20kb/s, for about 5 seconds, then i dies, if i restart stem the dl might restart, it might…
    solution, anyone?

  9. Rob says:

There is a difference between download at 1.2MB/S and 1.2Mb/S. . .If you say you download at 1.2 megaBYTES per second, what kind of pipes you rockin?

  10. Wicket_of_Endor_Moon says:

Steam is the shittest program ever. I have a 24,000K DSL2+ connection and i’m d/l at fricken 100 bytes. I’ve spent the last fricken 4 hours forwarding every fucken port on the rounter I can in an attempt to increase this fricken ****** d/l speed to no avail. So much for my LAN game tonight.

  11. Lol says:

Lol you think that what u guys have is bad. my steam wont even fucken load. I hate valve with a passion. This is what I have to say to their developers: “SUCK IT BIATCHES”

  12. nice says:

    hi!
    i need Steam-Down can i get link?

  13. Jager says:

Dont ask for Steam Down. It is illegal.

  14. Mao says:

its in kilobit, not in kilobyte. :)

  15. [vip]night says:

same problems. i have a 6Mbps broadband but in steam average is 25Kb/s.
and this really makes me feel bad

  16. Steam Down FTW! says:

I had Steam Down before and it acctully works but i somehow lost it
and cant find it, enyone knows where to get it?

  17. Tipstaff says:

Steam throttles your download speed according to the “Internet Connection” speed you assigned withing Steam itself. The higher the number, the more it will assign to your download. Try setting it to DSL/Cable 2M, or even Cable/Fiber 10M.

Also, if you guys are behind a router try temporarily removing the router, or set your computer to be on DMZ within the router.

  18. tenn says:

    Hi guys.

Have the same problem. I am on 8Mbit line and getting 20KB/sec…. If nayone come up with a solution please post back here…

  19. Charlie Kusk says:

    Hey

I have a dial-up connection because i live in the country and my only other option is paying 100$ a month for satellite internet. I’ve let it download for 30 hours and i’m only 5% done with my download. WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH STEAM.

I already own the Half Life 2: Episode 1 disc, Why the hell can’t I just play the damn game.

  20. Aaron says:

Oh, man, I know exactly what you are talking about. I already payed for Half Life 2, I just wanna play, dammit!!! My downloads are almost done, but it won’t let me on to finish it, because Steam is too damn busy!!! Arrrgggghhhh!!!!!

  21. T says:

Try opening Steam and changing your Internet Connection Speed setting.

In Steam, go to “File” then “Settings”.
Then clikc on the “Internet” tab and change your conection speed to “Cable/Fiber >10M” or “DSL/Cable >2M” and see if that improves your speed.

  22. T says:

Oh yeah… a coupe more points.
    - Valve does suck! It doesn’t seem to allow full use of your available bandwidth.
    - You’ve got blistering speeds as far as I’m concerned. Think of the other poor suckers who are updating / downloading at less then 1KB/s.
    - Go and do something else while it downloads.
    - For future reference, backup your Steam games so you can restore them if something happens.

  23. Valve doesnt care your downloading. Valve wants money, money and money… Im waiting for ProMod

  24. little johny says:

i dont know what u guys are talking about mine downloaded in one fuking day im going to have a bf- ***** fit. counter strike 1.6 is a whole differnet thing it took a 1 ******* week

  25. Nathan says:

Does anyone know exactly how large the episode one file is, not the multiplayer, but just the single player base called hl2 episode 1, Im not sure how long Ive been downloading at between 2 and 10Kb/s, a couple of hours total, off and on, I am at three percent

  26. tj says:

i totally agree why the hell do they not include all the bs on the dvd when they sell it and leave the download stuff to a minimum, what the hell is the point in buying the friggin dvd?

  27. Alan says:

Omg, steam is BS im on a 1.5mbps dsl connection and im getting around 10KBps and its taken 2 days now and freakin not even done.. far out steam needs better update servers!!!!

  28. Tim Dwighter says:

I work at Valve and I do not appreciate your negative views. As far as i’m concerned Steam is a good service that was made in the best intentions. If you have some patience you will soon be able to enjoy the best game ever created. I understand that you are mad that it is going slow but this is the best game ever created and many people want to play it. Furthermore I hope you enjoy your play experience and look to buy other Valve products.

    Sincerely,
Tim Dwighter (Concerned Worker at Valve)

    • podrek says:

Rubbish!!! you by game on cd so you can insert and install within minutes. not go to a shop by game on cd only to find you have to wait hours/days for the install to complete. this is just pathetic. i loved half life..but i no longer think its worth it. there plenty more games out there that rrivals steam/valve. i would never purchase a steam/valve product new. the last time i did the cd key was no good! and of course hours to install. aint worth the bother!

gr8 game but aint worth the bother

    • Mr. BullshitDude says:

What a load of bullshit. That is all I have to say.

    • mark says:

You are full of bullshit. When I buy a game on CD i should be able to play it without a net connection or spending ******* hours downloading the ******* game over a connection that is capped at 10gigs per month. i have to sit here like a ******* idiot waiting for almost half my download allowance to be used up.

you are the shittiest bunch of ***** i ever came across in my life. i will never buy a ******* thing from you ***** again.

    • Load of Crap says:

Well if your that concerned go to your boss and say steam is **** it needs to be heck faster and podrek is right why would you care you get a disk about two minutes and its done at the moment my computer has been download HL2 and i have left it over night and it has apparently 7 hour and 34 minutes remain how is that answer us!

  29. Magia says:

I have dial up :D i bought the game and the idiot at the counter got rid of the cd key. i heard there is a way to bypass Steam. called stam down. is that true?

  30. pharoe says:

Patience my *** ! I paid to play the game when I bought it, not to wait for a week !

  31. Cheesy says:

Damn, i’m downloading about 200 bytes every minute or so, then nothing happens for like an hour. I did everything, even reinstalled the games and steam. I’m at 11% and 22% for CS:S and DOD:S respectively! It’s gonna take a week, damn.

  32. ME says:

Yeah… If Valve doesn’t fix this problem then I won’t be buying any more HalfLife products. I bought a freaking CD. Put the program on the CD, install it from the CD then activate it through the Net. The end. This waiting for downloads is a pain in the ***.

  33. BetaK6 says:

Yeah..I’m pretty peeved at the whole steam thing as well, in the country i live internet is expensive, we have slow connections and when i eventually have saved enough money to go get my steam updates at the net cafe it ends up costing me around in u.s $200. So here’s to you steam for not answering my questions on your network, and here’s to valve for making a good game and the worst decisions of their lives, burn in hell corporate Ho’s

  34. Manik Madman says:

I jus brought the $79 HL2 pack online cause I forgot my old password an my email was deleted…. any way i have 1MB broadband which doesnt slow down much when both comps on my network are online….even when only one is (the one with steam) the download speed doesnt improve. Yet when it comes to downloading anything else online, like music games, etc. it works just fine. It only seems to be Steam. Oh and by the way changing the internet speed doesnt do anything either. However Steam used to work fine when i wasnt on a lan network, so im only assueming thats the reason for all my pain. Sod’s law if I change my network settings I’ll end up with no connection at all.

Is there any one out there with any knowlage or solution to this problem, Im getting a bit bored from reading other people bitching (my self not included) about it, but no one has any real answers!

  35. austin says:

i agree. everyone is complaining but no one is doing anything about it. i think there are just a lot of people on and valve/steam whatever needs to get more computers or something. this is my first day of having steam and its starting to piss me off

  36. Anti-Steam says:

GOD!! Steam makes me crazy too! i have 1MB dsl but it downloads with 4KB **** STEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!

  37. Anti-Steam says:

do anyone has a solution guys????????

  38. darkultra says:

Setting speed to Cable/Fiber > 10MB fixed it for me. I got 256KB/s but now Steam maxes my 4Mbit line at 486KB/s (downloading Red Orchestra)

Im behind a NAT (Windows XP SP2 with Internet Connection Sharing). It could be your ISP, or your router, or your firewall etc.

This is the reason I won’t buy anything from Steam – I prefer to own a physical DVD + cover so if I have a friend over the weekend and we want some Half Life 2 tim coop we dont have to wait until monday to play :) .

  39. Rando says:

I would really like to know… why I pay for the game and have to download it. I would rather install it within 5 minutes instead of having to wait a week to play it. I have to install Source about once a month to keep my performance right. There is a major glitch in the steam/valve system, and it just seems as if they’re trying to make a quick buck. Throwing more and more games onto steam to purchase, and once again, download. I think there should be some kind of lawsuit going on, if there is not one already…

  40. Nick says:

Are you guys kidding? I love sitting at my computer for days at a time watching the little bandwith monitor screen make waves as my speed bounces between 3 and 4 kbs! ITS SO EXCITING! When its gone I just uninstall the game and watch it again.

  41. CHRIS says:

What sad little women run this company! I have been blazing behind a t-1 connection with no problems at all. Now, I have to sit by and watch this company rip off it’s customers(me). I was going to buy the other games and now I will not.

You are a waste of time.

  42. Evan says:

In response to Tim Dwighter of Valve. I agree that HL2 is easily one of the best games of all time, however that is beside the point of what’s frustrating these folks. I’m in the service industry and when a company desides that its product(s) are so good that customer satisfaction isn’t important then you start seeing problems like this. Presumably, Valve pioneered the concept of purchasing games online because it wanted to not be beholden to third party distributors but more importantly to make the whole process more convenient. Unfortunately, Valve has had trouble on both of those fronts due to legal issues and inadequate logistical support at the front end. Where’s the convenience of waiting a week to play a game when you can drive to the local game store in a fraction of the time. After all, downloads are probably slow because so many people want to play the game which is great for Valve and it was successful in resolving its legal issues but if Valve sacrifices customer satisfaction by telling people to “just be patient”then it loses its case in the court of public opinion. I’m pretty sure you didn’t have to wait a week to play your copy. I’m on Valve’s side but it needs to do more to get on our side.

  43. Newbie says:

I couldn’t believe I was the only one with this damn problem. Reading all these comments is kind of a relief :P . I bought the retail version of HL2 and now I have to wait for Steam to download updates and stuff before I can actually play the f*** game. Why do they have to do this!! I bought the game yesterday and I’ve been all night downloading at 4 KB/s tops! and it has not yet get to 30%. At this pace I guess I won’t be able to play it until next weekend. And I just can’t understand why if I bought the game I can just install it from the CD and play it. And as a matter of fact I don’t even want to play it online, Valve, Steam and all its stuff just sucks.

  44. f0xhh4x0r says:

Its called latency between you and the server. Search google.com for like “internet info for dummies” and read how connections on the internet work.

  45. Nano says:

Thank God I’m not the only one. Im topping at about 10kb/s so it looks like I’m a little better off than some, But I have a 1MB connection so I’m ~Really~ Pissed off.

I’m only downloading Ragdoll Kung-Fu. And it may take over 8 hours…What the hell would happen if I tried installing HL2 I dont want to know or even guess.

Steam is, by far and away, the most useless peice of cow s**t Ever!

  46. leee kelllllllyyyyyyy!!!! says:

damn rite boys steam dose ******* suck i have 2mb brroadband and get a constant 30.00 kbs which is shite before u install it says summat like ( it will take 1 hour and 20 mins to install @ 250kbs dunno which lucky ******** get tht??? i have waited all day to plays hl2 and its on 50% I BOUGHT the game on a dvd rom so why not just play it from the dvd rom like every other fukcing game Eh?? problem solved if u ask me! goood luck downloading BOYS n GIRLS xxxxx

  47. Thanks Steam says:

I was greating looking forward to buying all the episodes that was comming with Half-Life 2, but after going through this horrible installation procedure, I know I won’t be buying anymore. NO GAME IS WORTH HITTING MY HEAD ON THE SCREEN AND KEYBOARD. Please let’s use a little sense and give us another CD to help us install the game.

  48. Kevin says:

I bought the DVD (Half Life 2: Episode One) thinking i would be able to play as soon as i started it, oh boy was i wrong. Valve decided to make an update already. When i read the contents of the update, i thought to myself, “Oh this should only take a few minutes.” try a few days. This is Bull ****.

  49. MrBungle says:

Undoubtably as many have mentioned, taking a more traditional approach to software distribution would have been wise. Not withstanding the frustration spewing into homes (be it oh.. so.. slowly) over Steam, I am mostly amazed that Valve has done nothing to rectify the issue (ie more F’n bandwidth). Done nothing over THE LAST 12 MONTHS that this bulletin board has spanned!!!! Come ON! Pull ya finger out! :-P

  50. Flashdrop says:

    Well guys I agree

An illegal copy of Episode one landed in my lap the other day. However I truly believe HL2 is a great game and companies that make great games deserve my money hence I purchased it via steam. It looks like due to incredibly slow downloads I won’t be able to play for a few days even though my credit card details went through INSTANTLY. No sorry Valve not good enough you MUST listen to your customers here, they are your company’s future! That illegal copy is looking more tempting as time goes by.

  51. Michael Meio says:

    Wait a minute!

By reading these replies, I couldn’t resist to post, specially after reading the Tim Dwighter’s post .. on which he claims to be a Valve worker. Well, It seems that Valve needs to double-check their worker’s background or add a new employee policy which in my opinion would say: “never ever give an opinion about this company disregarding the client’s prerogative…. ever!” No, dude.. I doubt you’re the right spokesperson for Valve on this topic.. I mean, What kind of BS is this? you really mean that the fact that the game is good gives you the right to tell your client to sit his *** and wait for as long as your stupidity allows? My suggestion to you, “pal” is: Shut up and if you’re really part of Valve, get to the paperweight on your desk, pick it up.. dial the steam representative or whomever’s direct phone number and DO SOMETHING.. then, come back with something better and please.. have some RESPECT for the client. And if you’re not part of Valve (my guess), cut the BS!

BTW, my speed is 35-40KB/s on steam downloading.. for those who think I should consider myself lucky, think again.. I have the right to demand a good service!

  52. Nanolathe says:

I just can’t see why Valve can’t increase their bandwidth. I mean Tim Dwighter’s post says that this is the best game ever *Cough Cough Not Cough* and yet you force your customers to wait for hours and in my case weeks to enjoy the game… why can’t you increase the bandwidth? or would that cost you too much money (money grabbing whores)

  53. Annonimous says:

I’m never buying a Valve product again. Do you hear me Valve? NEVER! Improve your service or the boycoters will increase

  54. CioloXL says:

actually, i got no downloading problems on steam…my speed is about 100-120 kb/s, but my real problem is the next: i don’t own an original cd-key for steam (CS), cuz i already got me a cracked version of steam :D ….but as cracked version i can’t play cs on any server :( (…..does any1 know how i can find an original cd-key, or key-gen…sth like that….i’m not really in the mood to pay this ******** for a game…it’s a rip-off!!!!!!!!

  55. CioloXL says:

actually…i can play on some servers…but those are very rare…i can play on more servers with my non-steam version :( (

  56. insanedave says:

holy ****. just purchased counter strike source, installed it and steam….yadda yadda now im waitin for it to frikkin update before i can play a game i just spent £20 on!. my 2MB ADSL usually downloads at 240KB a sec but steam trundles alond like a legless hippo at 13.3KB. if this is the future way to distribute games thjen the whole industry is gonna die out and be classed as the biggest F**K UP EVER! just cos valve dont wanna spen all the money they got from the first half life on good servers and shedloads of bandwith. i also have quake 4 which i think is **** and borin but didnt give me stress. i also have F.E.A.R. which i think is the best game ever but everyone is different (Tim Dwighter). all i no is that fear and quake 4 never gave me these problems cos i can get the updates from anywhere and just make a backup of the updates at a few hundred megs and use the dvd to install the game. i cant put into words how **** this is, do valve even consider the people who dont have a lot of money. i tell you now if this game turns out to be poo ill never even consider buyin another valve or even steam requiring product again. and they can suck camel testicles if they thin im gonna reccomend this to my mates!

  57. insanedave says:

me again soon after i put my pc in a dmz on my router steam crashed, refused to start so i uninstalled it and it also removed my counter strike files, so now i have to get the pointless dvd out install it and hope steam dont refuse my cd key. OI TIM ANY CHANCE U COULD SPEED THINGS UP A BIT!. BETTER STILL KILL ALL TRACES OF STEAMing pile of ****

  58. insanedave says:

right thats it i cannot be arsed with this pile of ****, never before have i purchesed a game that i cannot play even though my pc far exceeds the minimum requirments. i hope valve are a happy bunch of money grabbin wankers cos i believe that they have tried to have my pants down!

  59. saquib says:

Does STEAM support “resume”? or those mofos want us to keep pc in this shitting state 24/7 for weeks……..?

  60. saquib says:

wasted all da money for this ****** distributor – cutting cost being cheap: just to make more fukn money! this is why piracy is the answer for these ppl. there is just completely no freakin sense in going throgh this cheap steam ****! awesome game – but all of customers who paid money was cheated! thanks steam…someone shud sue these bustards!

  61. Rick says:

i also had this problem until i started to poke around the registry databse…
i originally set my speed to the standard ADLS setting but could not get a spees above 28K Grrrrr and after reading all the abouve i thought that i was stuffed.. i tried setting my speed to 10M but that still had no effect i then rebooted my pc and still no efferct.. so then i started poking arounnd the registry database and found the rate setting for steam.. look here
    [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-725345543-1897051121-1606980848-1003\Software\Valve\Steam]
    “Rate”=”30000″
this is what it will be set to if you pick 10M… i changed the rate to 150000 and then rebooted… steam then did a quick update and i started to download again but it was only a little faster about 37K i went into steam and looked at the internet connection speed and there was nothing in the box so i thought i’d try the 10M again and to my surprise steam now maxed at 150K which is what i should do on a 1.5Mbps connection.. it’s still a bit flakey and varies between 38K and 150K but it’s haeps fater than it was before and in the time it took me to go back to this site and post this comment i’ve downloaded about 48MB worth of data from steam..

hope this can help some of you out there..
    Rick

  62. Me says:

It’s just stupid. I work with a hosting company. My internet is 20 Mbit down but I only get 100 Kbyte/second instead of 1,8 Mbyte/second. This is a problem of too many people on 1 server.. Probably the server has a 100Mbit conn. but also 100 people connecting so that leaves a 1Mbit bandwith per user. They should get dedicated 1 Gigabit line per 100 users, or even divided per bandwith…It costs some but that;s the price for online registering…

Setting to cable/fibre 10Mb didnt help any for me, still samy crappy speed…

    Cheap ********….

  63. Lou says:

So i go and decide to reinstall my HL2, HL1, CS:Source, etc. well i guess i was one of the lucky ones. only took 3 days i think. i just kept checking to make sure it didn’t crash or freeze and have to restart steam to get going again. well go all that done today and wilst walking through a store see SIN. well i was gonna buy off steam but didn’t want to go through all that drama again. hahahaha, Valve, you guys are such kidders. i thought when i installed this game from the disc i could play. guess i was just a dumb consumer expecting logical results.

shoot me an email sometime. i work in the military soldering micro components, working on live 40kilowatt electronics, system lans, and mechanical gear. i might know something to help you out sometime.

  64. Aussie battler says:

Totally bullshit by steam. I cant understand how the decryption process isnt enough. I mean if steam thought about this logically you would think that once you download it you would then decrypt it for like say a max of 10 mins on any giving dsl connection to verify its a legit copy rite. Then after the decryption which is needed 4 it 2 function btw, they should release the update patches onto a website or something so it runs as a installer or add steam patches from all over the world in different locations much like what half life and counter strike was like b4 the invention of this evil tool.

I mean its not as if piracy can exist if you have the decryption, so why not do this to shift the weight of the servers and of the customer support centeres where 90% of the problems lie squarly in steams corner as a host for operating this.

  65. NeverRest says:

I bought the game css and ran it on steam. My download rate was at a max of 15kbs, wtf is this all about. YOU PAY MONEY FOR A GAME, YOU EXPECT THE SERVICE TO BE REASONABLE, BUT ALL YOU GET IS GREIF. I buy tonnes of games every year and this was my first one that ran on steam and i tell you what?! I will NOT be buying another game from these MONEY GRABBING COMMY ********.

  66. Jimmy Hoffa says:

I am trying to download the game again in hopes of playing it on Vista x64 seeing steam apparently has x64 patches for HL2 and Lost coast. But all I have to say is **** YOU STEAM. You provide a ****** service which we all paid for with the understanding that we would be provided a decent download speed seeing some of us have no choice but to download because we preordered online. And you wonder why people like me hack your ******* games and give them away to everyone for free. SUCK *** VALVE AND **** STEAM

  67. Jimmy Hoffa says:

Oh and I forgot, Your stupid *** encryption doesnt work anyway. I was easily able to find a way to decrypt your stupid ******* software before it was even released. All you are doing is pissing us off and see how many of us buy your next big piece of ****. For the experience you are giving us, I FULLY plan on illegally obtaining every piece of software you ever release in the future seeing I feel I WASTED my hard earned money with this bullshit steam experience.

  68. insanedave says:

hey good news i got steam to download at a half decent speed the night of my last post. i did it by lumping my very heay water cooled backbreaking PC downstairs so it was inches from the wireless router to determine wether the wireless signal was part of the problem, well it wasnt it was still dog slow. the next mornin speeds were acceptable so i managed to do required updates to a game i had already purchesed and play it. half life 2 deathmatch = ****. Counter strike source = FRUSTRATING ****. Day of defeat source = NOT EVEN BOTHERED. **** GRAPHICS AND AGED GAMEPLAY WASNT EVEN WORTH THE £20 I PAID, ADD ON TOP OF THAT ALL THE GRIEF AND IM A VERY PISSED OFF ANTI STEAM AND VALVE PERSON.

  69. Evo says:

    Well,
I merely did the same and went into the registery edit, found the same file as ^^ someone above pointed out, changed it to a ridiculiusly high number and now its runnin at 150 k/b’s instead of 20

  70. Zaul says:

Well, is someone interested in an online petition? i wouldn

  71. ANGRY says:

**** STEAM & **** VALVE!!! As i was planing on going out and parting with my hard earned $ for a copy of HL2 tomorrow I decided to download the DEMO first. Yes the demo, because i wanted to see how it ran on my new laptop. It finished downloading bout 2 hours ago. The last 2 hours I have trying to playing the ******* game and am sick of ******* around with this steam update’s and download bullshit. **** STEAM & **** VALVE!!! I now cant be bothered even getting the demo to run because im not even buying this game anymore because of this stupided ******* steam program, why the **** do i need it for the demo!!
Valve, im taking my $$$$ elsewere

  72. SAiNT says:

Hey Rick where is the file located in registery? can u plz provide more info fanx

  73. PP says:

Well, i removed my router and connected straight thrue the ADSL modem and instead of 20kb/s im at 100kb/s – 250kb/s. mostley around 200.
i have an 24/8 mbit connection.

  74. Eric Wu says:

Just go to the registry like what the guy posted up there and change the rate.
Speeds won’t go through the roof, but it’s decent.
Bittorrent I can get about 35-40 KB/s since I’m using a router, but I’m getting about 20-30 KB/s on steam.
    **** STEAM.

  75. pod says:

i have a 8mbit connection and hl2 and cs:s update are coming at the speed of 2-10KB/s

    gg valve!

  76. Edd says:

    not happy. 3kbs……

pathetic. whats happened to steam. gone downhill.

    cheers……

  77. anonymous says:

the reason hl 2 takes sooo long to download is the fact that it has to download the source engine aswell rofl work it out lads.

  78. MrMuz says:

I think a lot of these problems will actually be with your ISP and not steam.. I have HL2 at work and at home, work we have 4MB broadband with uncapped downloads and it works a dream..

at home I have 8MB tiscali, and they are infamous for capping P2P downloads, I downloaded Dark Messiah demo from Gamespot at 300KBS+, I got about 4-10KBS off steam.. something to with ports i think.. i’m no expert..

  79. Scout says:

It’s just not good enough, Source SDK downloading at 12kbs for about 1hr now. I always suffer these speeds on Steam after I format, but thats the price to pay for not buying game discs :E

  80. FromSweden says:

this is sickening i have to wiat 3hours now at 11%

  81. Soner says:

It is very simple. We pay for these games, some up to $50 and still the download speeds are crazy slow. To me that shows they don’t care about the costumer only the money. I would have loved if they spread out the download on to third party sites like fileplanet and such. Also, if they let you download a zip instead of install. If the game costs 50 in the stores and you get a manual cd and box with it, then I expect another substitute for buying it online for example faster downloads.
Steam, if oyu see this I strongly think you owe all of us an opoligy.

  82. stupid says:

This is stupid now. Download at 30Kb/s tops!! on 2mb Broadband? Somethings wrong here, and I have been down to even as low as 5Kb/s at one point. Steam need to sort this out!!

  83. marma says:

i’m on 0%, downloading at 2.7 kb/s …. should be ready by xmas

  84. Ed says:

Guys, i fixed the download rate issue (was getting 20kbs now getting 10 times that) by moving my machine into a DMZ on my linksys router.

basically forwarding all ports my machine. I guess you could search the steampowered forums for the ports that you need to forward if you wanted to try the safer approach… hell, its not like you have anything better to do whilst you wait :)

  85. Psych!!! says:

    haha!!!suckers
im truly sorry to gloat, but its just **** funny to watch all of you piss ur pants with rage at steam. Im truely sorry folks.
I got my steam ready and played it 15 minutes after i bought it :D

  86. Eric says:

I just bought HL2, and have 56K dial-up. I know it sucks and was expecting 3 or 4 hours of downloads, but the DVD box said nothing of this kind of online commitment. Has anyone contacted Valve or thought about a law suit? Seriously, could be considered fraud.

  87. Just says:

Delete these files and try again.
    \Steam\Steam.dll
    \Steam\SteamUI.dll
    \Steam\ClientRegistry.Blob
    \Steam\config\serverbrowser.vdf
    \Steam\config\masterservers.vdf

Worked for me. Went from 35KB/s to 1.2MB/s.

  88. Kurt says:

Is that safe i have 20kb/s im not sure if it is safe to delete theese files did steam work ok after you deleted them????

  89. Berggren says:

were can I download steam down?

  90. Gael says:

Yea, free downloads are looking more tempting… I’m still lucky to have blazed the Half_life 2 demo in 10 minutes, but this bullshit of buying a freaking DVD (yea, 4.7 potential gigabytes there) all wasted into soft installation. Damn, what has our country done to itself? Why not just sell a slip of paper with the cd-key listed on it, and stop insulting our intelligence Valve! I can’t wait to obtain some free Half-Life 2 and maybe Portal once you release it, only to be cracked. =P

  91. Gael says:

Oh yea, and whether that Tim guy is actually a legit Valve employee or not, who are you to ******* tell clients to “be patient” with this stupid process? I mean, in some countries the luxury of internet it pretty expensive, and not too fast either, like Brazil for instance. This is the reason people are cracking your **** to begin with, fools. Vai e toma no cu, seus caralhos!

  92. Jonny Badd says:

Has Valve actually replied to any of these complaints? It seems they’ve got us over a barel and are shafting us big time. I bet they are using 2 tin cans and a piece of string as a modem. Not really the height of technology, 4.8 Kb a sec – cooooooooooooooooooool !!!!!

  93. angry says:

Tomorrow I am getting a CRACK. And **** valve\steam I will never buy a thing from these cheats.

  94. Poowis says:

Right i managed to reach a peak of 3.something kb/s.

    i have a 2.3 mb connection.

is anyone here on TalkTalk broadband?

i aint dl/in half life 2, its cs:s im dl/ing but its the same, slow as funk.

my average is 900 odd bytes/s. peak was as a said 3 kb/s.

    degrading or what.

  95. Poowis says:

    *cries*

  96. Xtremeness says:

I just got hl2 today and i got dial-up! …. so i guess it will take about 3 days to 2 weeks… gee…. cant wait… the hl1: anthology thing completely downloaded in a half hour.. amazing…. heh… my peak download rate is 12.8 KB/s…. WOOT…

  97. Kodan50 says:

I bought Half-life 2 today. I remember the horrible experience from the demo. The hours of downloading. Steam crashing every chance it got. I got soo fed up that today I bought the DVD .. I thought if it CAME on DVD, then I can PLAY off DVD. .. Im sorry I bought the damn thing, Im sorry I thought it would work .. I will buy Half-life games, but if it says steam, I will rather not buy it, the way I see it, I understand that you want to stop piration, but if I buy a game of DVD, why not run the game off DVD? YOu have lots of space left on the dang thing, why download updates? I am getting 250 Kb/s, but I don’t want to update, i just want to play the game, I mean,. you wouldnt release it unless it worked, right?

Steam is the worse content deliverence system ever, and putting a wonderful game like HL2 on it, its .. insulting, and a bad executive move, I bought the DVD, please, PLEASE just let me play the damn game off the DVD, seriously …

  98. Eddy says:

My father used his credit card and bought this game for me… I was getting into my gaming face , double clicked Counter-strike : Source. Then I find that i have to freaking download at such a low speed!!! I have a 30 mb connection.. normally I can download over 2000kb/s FOR THIS GAMe, IM ONLY DOING 100mb/s Averaging…. I get a few bursts to 400 kb/s for around 1 min, then goes down.. I have to wait for a freaking hour just to play a game.

  99. ReApEr says:

    man…look….if u are tired paying for games…try using PacSteam….is the best Steam hack ever….sorry valve…but i better use a hack then stay 5 hours to download HL2:ep1 at 50 kbs….GUYS..USE PAC STEAM!!!!1

  100. Dnz says:

OMFG. I thought would be nice to buy flatout2 on steam. I Shoulda checked this site first.

Been crawling along with wild fluctuations between 19K to 3K to NOTHING. Its been over 24 hours now, and im on 22%.

It ******* SUCKS. I will never buy anything through that again. This is pathetic. Overnight it did like 4% for me. Yeah. GREAT.

  101. DIE STEAM says:

ok im just a new guy here,I aint bought the game but i DLed it from torrents but when it finished after 3 weeks it said it couldnt load steam.dll so i tried other stuff for the tutorial i got 4 it but it still didnt work so i gave up,
Steam u try 1,000,000’s of ppl’s patients, for those who DLed it i’d look into the connection stuff like Rick said about the rate n all,try your best to increase it and just like goto sleep when it starts :P it’ll go faster
P.S Steam creators,Valve creators get faster comps and servers for the poor guys who has enough of the BS for your connection rates.

  102. DIE STEAM says:

Also make a new HL2 Version so it dont require your BS steam.dll files,if u ignore this then go to hell u ********

  103. AhS says:

The name steam is an over-statement. It suggests somethings as fast as steam engines. Maybe they should be called oil.

  104. Gordon says:

This is insane …. less than 1Kb/s average over a three hour period. I really looked forward to this game, but i will never buy anything powered by Steam again.

  105. Five Damned Dollarz says:

I would LOVE to have it going at your speeds! I’m trying to download it at an average speed of 3kb/s!!! Is there a way to bypass the patching processes? If so please tell me about it!

  106. Blink says:

What r u complainin bout fool?! 500 KB/s is great, there’s nothin wrong wit that…. Half of us are thankful for atleast getting 100kKB/s! Damn!

  107. Ticked says:

Just bought HL2 and was psyched for some single player action. WTF am i downloading. When did i need to connect to the internet for anything other then registration or patching if the game on the CD didn’t work on my system. I’m sick and tired of gaming companies getting over on us gamers.
When will i get to play HL2? Who the heck knows. What good is a great game if it wont freaking play out of the box???

  108. Haaaaaaaahahaha says:

Instead of complaining about ~500KByte/s you should rather be thankful that you’re not like me, ~25KByte/s on an 8Mbit/s DSL line. That’s largely due to a f*ckass ISP traffic shaping policy but still painful.

  109. Damn says:

you think that is bad my download speed is 1.2KB/s and only goes down i have 1MB/s connection it has taken me 8 months to get to 89% downloaded

  110. Anna Moore says:

I don’t understand why you people are always complaining.

You are downloading the best game ever developed. The best game in the world, from the best developers. Do you have any idea how many people are downloading this game? Thousands and thousands.

We do our very best here at Steam, and a little more gratitude would be appreciated. All you have to do is contact us at Support and we will explain to you exactly what is wrong.

It is people like you, on sites like these, dealing in pirated games, stealing keys, and forcing us to fight this terrible crime as best we can, WHO ARE TO BLAME!

  111. TFB says:

I agree with Anna, as for your download speeds, I dont know. I have 1.5mbps DSL and i get 167KB/s on steam which is the fastest I download anyways. I don’t think its steam. I have a router with built in firewall and norton running all the time and neither firewall has ever effected my DL speed (except bittorrent).

  112. StiltDog says:

    Oh, yeah!

Nice wind up ‘Anna’. If I thought you existed I might get mad, but lets face it guys & gals, all you’re seeing here is the cynical exploitation of the gaming masses by commercial interests that just don’t give a ****. If they consider this an acceptable level of service to preserve their precious intelectual property, then prove them wrong, Don’t buy another thing.

  113. loser says:

hahahahaha, u think u’r connection is slow, well myne are 500 B/s, BYTES!!!!!, thats a half Kb!!!!!!!!!!, ;( If i’m lucky, it goes up to 10 Kb/s

  114. Steam Ball's Suckers says:

    Anna Moore ,

People give a cash to bought a game, take it home, and play it, and have fun.

    with Steam :

people bought game, and play it next month.

THAT is just wrong.. you dont see that?

btw, this is electric century.. why use Steam?

  115. Ben says:

    hmmm…

I have no problem with everyone bitching, you paid good money to play a game which is (literally) not working… however…

I live in australia (we have slow, expensive internet) and only have a 1.5Mb connection. This is not the solution, but it may help…

On your firewall/router open up UDP ports 70000-70015 and TCP/IP ports 70020-70050.

Or just turn your firewall off…

  116. Jonathan says:

I live in Aus – Syd and i turned of my firewall and still getting **** speeds of 10-80kps while my max is 144.9kps which must have been really flukey or something… I put the filter thing on 10mps and stil nothing…

    This is bs…

  117. fucksteam says:

    **** you steam!

I hesitantly bought episode 1 last night. Hesitantly because i had a miserable ******* time installing hl2 (but loved the game). I figured you incompetent ******** would have fixed the problem by now… right???? WRONG! As soon as the installation begins, it locks up my computer and i can’t do a ******* thing. It takes several minutes just to kill steam. The install has been going for 14 hours, but the only time anything appears to happen is in the first few seconds after the “reinstall” begins.

    Suck my ****.

  118. pissedASfuck says:

**** STEAM and **** GODDAMN VALVE. In a world where I can illegally download anything I want – I went to my retail store and LEGALLY purchased my copy of Half Life 2. I had fond memories of HL1 and love for the company that brought this fine product to us. However, I don’t give a flying **** how good the sequel is – entertainment isn’t worth waiting a goddamn month for a ******* program I just payed money on. To all the cocksuckers over at valve – pull your goddamn heads out of your asses before it’s too ******* late. You’re utter disregard for customer service is ******* yourself. Your customers will either pirate your software or just buy another title from a company who gives a **** about customer service.

I’m going to take my copy back to where I bought it and get another game not released by valve or steam. **** VALVE. **** STEAM. This is goddamn bullshit. You corporate prick cocksuckers have taken all the enjoyment out of gaming and royally fucked your fanbase WHO GODDAMN BUYS YOUR **** LEGALLY AND PUTS FOOD ON YOUR TABLES.

    Eat a ****.

  119. Phillip says:

I’m getting 30-90 kb/s on Steam, so far I’m 4% done with Half Life 2. I guess I’m just one of the lucky ones, because I haven’t even tried Rick’s method or forwarded any ports yet.

  120. Paul says:

I’m also facing the same problems. I have no problem downloading torrents at 400-500 kb/s, but when downloading CS:S via Steam I am getting 30 kb/s. What. The. ****.

Hours upon hours are spent waiting for this to download, and I can only feel pity for those who are getting less than 10 kb/s. That’s barely better than a 56k connection.

  121. Stu says:

i was getting about 3-7 KB/S also before, but i went to the firewall exceptions list and opened 2 ports that steam said on their customer support list, and I added steam to the exception list. Then i restarted the computer. Now I’m going from 110 to 160 KB/S. The ports were 27020 and 27050. Try that, it worked for me.

  122. Coxy says:

Stop the download by exiting out of steam.
open windows explorer and browse to the Valve/Steam folder.
    Delete the Clientregistry.blob file
    Run Steam, log back in.

this forces steam to find a new content server, which will almost always get you a faster connection. Sometimes you have to do this a couple times before it picks a good one.

  123. joe says:

Okay so i go and get half life, half life 2 and episode 1 thinking i would just have to install them from the disc, then i found out i have to download it off steam, “no problem it’ll be done it about an hour” i thought.

You guys are lucky i can’t even get past the ******* updating ****, it keeps ******* freezing, so **** this, i go and try to return the disc back to the shop and it turns out i can’t, so steam just cost me 50 euro, thanks a-*******-lot

so what i have to say to you, steam is **** YOU!

  124. Weirdman says:

I figured out a way to fix this problem… See how you are downloading multiple things? If you only download one at a time they will load much faster this is not a real way to fix this problem but it helps.

  125. felix says:

i bought half life 2 game of the year edition and played it happily until my computer imploded and i lost every thing. so i tried to make a new account (i had forgot my old account information) and when i tried to install everything again it said CD key in use and steam weren’t any help so if any one could give me a cd key (doubt it) or a link to a key gen that actually worked it would be appreciated

  126. Gwarmaster says:

Where i work i’ve gotten download speeds of up to 11.5 MBs/sec, very nice.

  127. stephen says:

This is rediculous. I cant believe Valve wants Steam to be the place to buy games online, yet has not figured out a way for users to get better speeds. I just bought Counterstrike: Source and I am now regretting doing so, Its Saturday night, i want to play tonight, but its looking like i may not get to play until Sunday or Monday.

    Steam = ***

Dear Steam, use that money i just gave you to buy some bandwidth so i can actually play your game within a reasonable amount of time. I’m getting 30k/s, teh ***.

  128. stephen says:

    Follow up:

Not 100% sure this was the cause of my 30k/s speeds. But i added port forwarding to my router, and my speeds are now at ~250k/s, which is acceptable.

    follow the instructions here…
    http://support.steampowered.com/cgi-bin/steampowered.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=11#ports

    Required Ports for Steam

Your network must be configured to allow Steam access to the following ports:
    Steam Client

    * UDP 1200 (For the Friends service)
    * UDP 27000 to 27015 inclusive
    * TCP 27020 to 27050 inclusive

    pirate to avoid steam
    end of story
steam, wanna stop piracy, stop this ****

  131. Cata says:

OK… first off… you CAN install from the disc and then update over Steam, which is what I’ve done with everything I get from them aside from what I purchase over Steam electronically (runs it down to just updates, usually… 10 mins of patching?). Another note I’d love to throw out is that no matter what I’m downloading I generally pull 300kb/s… Even on 3 or 4 seperate items at the same time. Perhaps you’ve just got crappy luck?

  132. Zachary Daniels says:

I dont know about you guys but I just bought Counter Strike Source which said It had Bots for Offline Play, It had no System requirements.. No Internet Connection Required Box. And I live in the country with 56k Internet and so Im out 30 Bucks because of Steam. This is the single biggest dissapointment in gaming history as far as im concerned, I will be suing steam for False advertisment and misleading consumers. It wouldnt be so bad if you could take the game back to wal-mart where you got it but no such luck. ~later

  133. Pain of Salvation says:

What are you all complaining about? You can set an option not to update your game by right clicking on your game and selecting properties, going the updates tab and selecting not to download updates. If you want the lastest patched version you will have to wait for the patch to download, just like any other game, I fail to see the issue.

If you do what Random said you can get servers that download at around 500kb/s which in my opinion is a perfectly reasonable speed. Have you ever tried to make a server network that can serve 1000’s of people whole games (>3gb) without some slowdown? Most servers only have to serve up little files (

Well I bought TF2, the download was a whopping 800 bytes a second for a while…I deleted the .blob file as above about 4 times, and finally got a server that is downloading at 900KB sec – 1MB/sec…

Thanks for the tip…Valve should have incorporated a good ‘find the fastest server’ method.

  142. Matty says:

I’m getting 500 BYTES per second not even a single kb. I usually get 2mb dl speeds. Help?

  143. [...] The first Google result for ’steam download speed’ gave me the page full of negative comments about Steam and Valve. ever notice how much steam uploads as much as it downloads?

    bye for now.

DO IT DO IT DO IT!

PS Shouldn’t Valve write this into Steam so it does it automatically and you don’t have to go deleting files? Just a thought Valve…

yeah all of the above, im pretty new to steam and thought it was a pretty good way to buy games. but since moving to a vista pc its all changed. frame rate in half life is not that good anymore ,and the whole downloads pausing for hours or low speeds it pissing me right off.

orange box – cannot believe that valve provide 2 DVDs with jack on them, 18 hrs on 8Mb broadband, regularly pulls at +500 kbps and i’m getting 50 at best, best estimate 6 days to complete. been playing halflife since year dot, now they can kiss my a***.

Just purchased Episode 2, I’m on a 20meg connection and my average download speed is around 80kb. Shocking. C’mon Valve, please change the way Steam works. 155. gcompc says:

As of this date we still have the same problem. I’ve been on an update for 3 days now. Time to take offensive action.

Round 1: All respoders host a you tube video of Steam downloading the updates and games. Raise as much hell on the video as possible, show your purchase of a DVD, show the horribly painful download. Yak it up let everyone know, don’t buy Steam products, post this URL with others having the same problem.

Round 2: Write to every reviewer you’ve ever read a review from on the net or in a magazine. Ask them to review going on line with a game that has to be activated with steam.

  158. 8==> E'=== says:

Valve really need a punch in the **** for this shite.
Antipiracy measures do not work……. there will always be someone out there smarter than you think you are, and It is the consumer who is the victim / casualty. from having to pay an pay again for tracks we already own in 15 different formats. to buying a DVD which apparently contains a game but being forced to download it of some antiquated server. its all bullshit. I for 1 wont be buying any game that needs to be activated in this way again.

  159. Kazz says:

I had a modest plan: I bought Half Life 1 – Anthology. I instaled the Shisteam and it doensn´t aloud me to play OFFLINE!! It´s freeze the system and made my PC reboot everytime I tried to make the register. It seems that it try to use the smae port or IP confirguration to access the web regyster. Anyone knows how to configure this **** to use a diferent IP or other port?
    thanks!

  160. Aces Yea says:

  163. SOLUTION says:

I have a solution for everyone. STOP BUYING VALVE STUFF! download it for free using a torrent, then break the file using a CRACK, and use STEAM DOWN, so that way those fuckers don’t make money off of us and we don’t have to put up with this bullshit.
**** VALVE, **** STEAM, AND **** ANYONE WHO LIKES THEM! :)

  164. Ryan says:

I am just posting to let people know that the comment left by P_R_O_Z_A_C and person using Random as the name.

    1. Stop the download by exiting out of steam.
    2. Open windows explorer and browse to the Valve/Steam folder
    (standard install is C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam).
    3. Delete or rename the Clientregistry.blob file
    4. Run Steam, log back in.

This really really works!!! I was downloading at a max of 100Kb/s and that was not to often mostly around 40Kb/s. I did what its says to do and just renamed the file. then opened steam and boom i am downloading at 350Kb/s with a max peak of 701Kb/s. this works and everytime you do it, it searches for a new server.

  165. WOODOLLARS says:

“I work at Valve and I do not appreciate your negative views.

    Sincerely,
Tim Dwighter (Concerned Worker at Valve)”

Well, I am also a concerned worker at Valve, and I will tell you all – STEAM SUCKS. AND VALVE SUCKS TOO. I appreciate all of your negative comments because they are true!

Furthermore, I hope you enjoy your suck *** downloading experience (I don’t really give a rats *** since we already got your money anyway!!!! haha), and I also hope you look to buy more of our crappy Valve products – so we get even more money!!!

  166. Siniad says:

    To Miss Anna Moore

You asked for gratitude and appreceiation so here it is:
Thank you so much for the **** steam made us gamers put up with. Thank you for giving us some of the worst service online service us gamers could ever witness. Also thanks for making this **** program called steam compulsory for playing one of the best game series ever created and ruining the experience and last but not least thank you for making the gaming community realize there are better services out there such as gamespy or xfire.

So the main idea is thank you for the horse ****, it is truly appreciated. (just read the comments)

  167. byap says:

Steam is the most useless thing ever. I download updates at 2kB/s. The latest update for TF2 which does BARELY anything took 3 hours. Deleting the clientregistry.blob file does NOT work. I’ve tried it a dozen times and each time takes about 2 hours. It might be my internet though. But i even connected directly to my router and it’s the bloody same.

    Screw this.

  168. jake says:

haha!! it will only takes 13 min for me to download HL2..but its laggy

  169. RNCM says:

It can be quite quick. I’m using the University netqork and although at the moment its on 20-30 KB/sec I’ve seen it a lot higher (500-800 KB/sec) and the most I ever saw it was 1.6 MB/sec/

  170. sephirom says:

Dear Tim Dwighter (Concerned Worker at Valve)

    in respost of your comment

im living in japan and i have a connection speed about 100MB,
and i have to agree to everyone here, my download updates at 450/800kb its good considering the speed of the other users, but the problem is,
the download stop! and a i cant play my games!, i pay about 18,000 yen for a original copy of lost planet and hl2, and i cant play any ******* game!

    HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN THIS!

you tell about patience, i tryed to contact the valve suport and nobody respound! i tryed to contact the game producers and the respost is, this is a problem of valves’s and steam and we can’t do anything, and you tell about patience! go ******* yourself!

i don’t wanna to play these games anymore and i don’t want a suport to instal my games, i want my money back!

i don’t pay for a box of the game to put in my window to everyone see it! and i don’t pay for showing the valve and steam logo for nobody.
i make cm’s but i need cash to do this no pay for it!
im realy disapointed to your comment, not your comment but the valve’s company comment.

and this is for everyone, stop to buy valves products theres dozen of bether games for sale, buy from ea, crytek, or anyother don’t put your money in steam products, you pay to play and if you have a problem the suport is include! a company who dont given us this service needs to close! dont spend your money in valves company!

  171. mr teagbags says:

i deleted the one clientregistry.blob thing random said to delete and when steam starts up it takes like 15 minutes to update. is it supposed to do that?

  172. Burp says:

****, I am the worst here!! Imagine how would you feel if you are me!!
I spent a lucky day by downloading hl2 deathmatch update for 7 hrs at 55 Kbps. After playing an awesome game for 2 weeks this error ruined my life!!! “STEAM IS ALREADY RUNNING YOU MAY RUN ONLY ONCE INSTANCE OF STEAM COPY BLAH BLAH…”. Only solution was to uninstall and reinstall. After lot of patience of 2hrs steam updated. But this gave me a heart attack:It said that the hl2 deathmatched is not installed!!!!!! Now i have to go over the whole process at 5b/s!! Cut cables at meditteranean are not helping either!! It wont download!! My dreams of playing have gone!! Wish i had a genie.
If Steam people are here, please consider the idea:
I understand that your servers are jammed/busy/non functional. Wouldnt it be nice if you give all of us mirror source to download it. Try to make a deal with some top download companies to increase the bandwidth. If you want to give it to some people only then ask them about the CD key or game no. or someting that is unique. Please dont influence me to hate you. Please!!!!
Oh, another thing, can i reduce my latency in any way? I have a 512kbps connection.

  173. Fumin Human says:

Listen man. I’m beyond angry. This is a damn joke!!? And a valve employee has the cheek to post and tell us to be patient? What? Listen, I buy the damn game, I put it in the drive, I play. What don’t you understand in that Steam? Steam/Valve are shameless in what they’re doing. I don’t want your adds spread all over the shite engine claiming needed net speed first off. Secondly, at least give me the choice 2 switch it off. I’ve been waiting 3 days 2 play it and to be honest, I’ve lost interest. Think of smarter ways to capitalise on your gullible customers. I glad the cracks out now for real. Hope u all loose big time shmuks..

  174. DarrenPoison says:

Dude. No offence, but you’re an idiot. 500 KB/s is a great speed.

For the past few weeks I had to reinstall STEAM and my Cs:s DL rate was less than 1KB/s.

SO READ THIS ANYBODY WITH A STEAM DL PROBLEM!

Contact your ISP tell them to reset your internet, give you a new IP etc.

I did, mine was 1KB/s, took 2 mins to call up my ISP get them to reset and then in no time I was on 256KB/s the max I can get! My games were dled in about a minute.

I was soo pissed off with this so I decided to come back top these forums and tell everyone because I know how it feels, for 3 weeks.

So do what I said, hopefully it will work out for you.

    Happy Fraggin’

  175. Concerned says:

Live with it people, STEAM is the best thing people, who don’t have Gaming Stores nearby, have.

  176. Joshonfire says:

I just got a steam crack. Those money grabbing ******** deserve no less, its about time some of us took that money they stole back.

  177. chris says:

Ok for those who want to get more speed from steam the only way is to uncap your bandwidth from your provider, such as cable or dsl outlets. Myself i have uncapped my internet cable speed so i can get about 2 megabytes a second. The features in your providers can go from high speed to extreme or nitro that is if you use shaw cable. For other providers it may be named differently, also turn off your virus programs for the downloads otherwise lag will take over. As for steam i can always get my games in under an hour or less, depending on how many are online to steam. So remember uncap your bandwidth,do not do it illegally otherwise you will be banned from your provider for life. That is not a joke.

  178. slickpic says:

hey i know how you guys fell i started downloading last night i wake up 10:00am and that that load of craps at 5% first thing in my mind was what the &%@( theyr’e nothing but cheap *** peaple they need to take their servers out of the stone age.i have the fastest internet possible i download at 1mbs i download movies in a breeze and this 700mb or little more.and the file is only at a mesely 5% ive even turned off my firewall intirely and the most that changed was a couple bytes..*** these jerks

  187. ANdrew says:

    **** YOU STEAMING ****!!!!

This is fucked, i loved half life so i thought i would do the RIGHT THING and buy HL2. Never again, torrents & cracks for me.

This is beyond the joke, I buy the orange box (2 dvds) and i can’t play right away. Whats the ******* point of the dvds?? Maybe make it 98% install from DVD and the other 2% from the internet.

Also, i got to 7% updating for just Half Life 2 and when i restarted STEAMIN ****, its starts back at 0%.

I hope whoever was responsible for this piece of **** get fired and brutally fucked up the *** viciously.

  188. I’m downloading Crysis: Warhead, and it is making me RAAAGEEE! I got to 70% or so (after hours of slowness) and it reset to 0. I cried with happiness, let me tell you.

  189. pissedoff says:

3 years later still **** download speed, i bought hl2 ep2 via steam an im stuck on updating then get an error “steam-Error , this programme is currently unavailable, please try again later” this been happeneing all ******* day an when it is downloading its 10k/bs once it resumes downloading still at 0% after 2 days, should be ready to play once hl2 ep10000 comes out.

  190. Tom says:

i went out and bought the game and it doesnt work for me :S took all night to install and by the time it was done, refused to run “steam is unable to run this application.

  191. Lewis Jones says:

your downloading 3 games. it's not that slow. i get maximum – even on normal downloads- 250kbps. if i download 3 on steam i get around90 each. that's slow

  192. doomed says:

Wow, that's still fast. I get max 160 KB/s with my 1 mbps connection. :(

  193. Nomis says:

  196. Marcus says:

My download right now is running at 40 kb/s. I'm only downloading one thing. Does anyone know how to fix this? My connection is stable and speedy in game.

  197. a friend of jesus says:

this is BS steam. If any one who works there reads this please tell your boss or whatever and ask,no tell,no put a gun to there head and force them to get some speed downloading from all the cash were giving you.

  198. mongo says:

Its ******* ****, i have redownloaded the ******* game 5 times now, 400 kb/s is ****, i have 100/100 mb and should at least top speed 2 mb/s, **** server valve have, I will never buy another game from valve in my ******* life.

  199. Phox says:

Okay. This may not apply to everyone, but I was having this problem while downloading GTA4 and Left4Dead… I poured over this entire (Nearly… but what can I can say? It’s three year thread… I’m only human…) thread looking for a solution. Well. A buddy of mine tipped me off that I was in a skype call with. This may not apply to everyone, but it sure saved my ***. If any of you are using an Nforce Motherboard, make sure the FirstPacket service is disabled (Found in your Nvidia Control Panel), or if you have it on and prefer to use it, make sure Steam is on your high priority list. Otherwise, that FirstPacket service is saying, “Steam? What’s that? Not important.”

I don’t know how many of you that will help (Hopefully someone.) Helped me, anyway. I was getting a measly 18-70 kb/s. Now I am up to 350+.

    Good Luck with Steam!

  200. Harry Aries says:

Wow… It’s been almost four years since this thread started, and yet still, Valve has yet to fix its “Steam” program. There’s a simple concept valve isn’t grasping: If you provide ****** service, people don’t buy your products. Now, you would think that a company so eager to take our money would realize that if your games are user friendly, you’ll sell more product therefor, more money. But nevertheless, valve trudges along, most likely making less and less money each day. And somewhere, the ignorant, incompetant, *** hole that has created, and yet to fix, one of the most hated, bug ridden, and downright terrible programs to date, is wondering “…well, whats going on?” And for the utter pain that that man has put each and every one of us through, he deserves a punishment worse than death. I hope you live forever, creator of steam. Thik about it.

  201. Harry Aries says:

    “[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-725345543-1897051121-1606980848-1003\Software\Valve\Steam]

    Rick”

This actually worked really well for me. went from abt 3kb/s to abt 25-30kb/s. And if you are iffy about deleting files like me, this is your best bet. Thanks Rick!

  202. Jerry says:

    guy’s i wanna punchase half-life 2 lost coast but i don’t have USD

  203. Jerry says:

well forget about punchase, i wanna download half-life 2 portal but it’s too slow

  204. Philip says:

well, this might work maybe, but try going to your steam folder and delete the ClientRegistry.blob then exit steam and restart it, let it update, this works for some people and if it still doesnt work, try doing it 2-3 more times and if it doesnt work then, i dont know what to tell ya

  205. Shadowi says:

wow its been 4 years since this thread started and yet ****** STEAM STILL HASN’T FIXED THIS GODDAM PROBLEM. I have a 10mb connection and it downloads at 150kbs but at least its better then some of the speeds like many other people if i saw steams boss lying on the ground on fire i wouldn’t piss on him to save him furthermore i would set a pack of hungry dogs on him while he sleeps then maybe the new boss would be better.

  206. ROGER says:

JUST GO OUT AND GET THE DISCS….I AM ON DISC 2 AND HAVE BEEN SITTING HERE ABOUT 10 MINUTES. SAME PRICE AT BEST BUY AS ON STUPID STEAM.COM

  207. Joshua hamrick says:

You wussies it could just be your internet provider is throttling you not steam. and sure of course they will not want to take all of your bandwidth in doing so you wouldn’t be able to browse the net or do other internet related things within your computer well you would but it would be slower. Right now i am downloading the Zombie Panic! Source and its going around 150KB/s to a peak of 400KB/s + it varies but its hot darn good speed for me and its only at around 50% being of course its 3.4 or so GB in size. Sense State wise i live closest to Chicago Chicago. i get best speed this way. for all those with slower speeds you might just need to find a better location to get better speeds or …Your internet connection you bought might just be slow naturally depending on where you live sort of like China and japan get blistering fast speeds naturally. USA gets them slow because were naturally not ahead of the game in internet connectivity. ^_^ Just be happy with what speed you get and wait i have waited 2 hours thus far its easy. and now my panic source is at 54%.

  208. Valdentia says:

Steam is a big fat steamy pile of ****! Taking a week to update a game when my connection is just fine.

  209. Phil says:

Lol at all the people who are complaining and dont know how to use steam.

Change your internet connection settings to the highest (fiber optic or something) and there wont be a cap.

im downloading using steam as fast as regular downloads

  210. David says:

Really? I’ve been getting rates around 700 kbps, sure my internet is not that slow but steam recently got much more users, and I guess valve has yet to realize that unless they buy more bandwidth they will lose sales? I guess it will come to them in time.

  211. John says:

I get about 1.5 MB/S on my desktop computer but I get 200 kb/s on my laptop. Does it have to do with router distance or something?

  212. Zorro says:

There are other “play online” services like windows live that do not have the problems experienced by the overwhelming majority of the posting parties on this forum.

When I purchase a game on CD I expect to play single player on my PC unless otherwise stated on the box. If I see it is internet only I won’t buy the game, and now if I see Steam or Valve I won’t buy that game either.

I must congratulate the employees of Steam, Valve and game producers who use them for making ******** the consumer such an art form. Never would I have dreamed it possible to make so much money with such a poor product delivery system, and customer service that is equally deficient.

Just remember, “What comes around goes around.” Hope you enjoy it as much as your customers do.

Should an actual employee of those involved in this fiasco read these posts and get upset I’d be very surprised because if these posts bother you so much you have two options as I see it. (a) Fix the problems or (b) quit and go to work for another company.

    Dear steam,
I’m downloading TF2 right now, it’s a fun game and all that, if only i wasn’t downloading at 22.3 KB/s!!! i’ve gone 3 hours straight at 1%. I will admit that waiting for this thing to install is more frustrating than playing modern warfare 2 and getting locked up with a bunch of screaming little kids at the same time. PLEASE HELP!

  217. Tyler says:

I very nearly, nearly bought GTA IV off steam. Had installed steam and everything. My mate told me about the slow downloads. 4 years on and still nothing? I swore I’d never deal with Steam after my account was banned after it was hacked and they would refuse to unban it. Yet another douchebag capitalist scum of a company that needs to burn to the ground and remain in ashes for all eternity!!

Power to the people! Say no to steam!

  218. Tooby says:

I have a friken 6MB/S and Steam installs games at a friken 30kbp/s Steam is so SHI*

  219. Ventris says:

listening to you guys makes me feel lucky and frustrated at the same time. some of you are complaining about 8 kbp/s download speeds but others are whining about 500 kbp/s speeds. i get anywhere between 10 to 50 kbp/s download speeds. Steams not that bad, you might not be connected to steam in the right region or with the right spped. just go to view>settings>downloads+cloud and change your settings to suit you most.

  220. KelanX says:

    I’m currently downloading CS:S and i usually have 250KB/s – 500KB/s but now for some reason I have 700KB/s – 1.2MB/s
