Fix your xBox 360 crash problems
Having trouble with your xBox 360 blue screening, locking up, crashing, or just generally freezing? Voodoo Extreme presents the likely hypothesis that this is caused by power supply overheating. If so, it’s a design flaw that Microsoft will have to fix in their next hardware iteration, but for now, you just want your black-friday cheap xbox 360 to work as planned. The solution is to lift your power supply off the flow to give it air circulation on all 6 sides. Voodoo reports over 7 hours of gaming time in this configuration.

If anyone wants to send me an xBox 360 for scientific testing, I would be more than happy to write up a protocol, conduct the experiments, and write a lab report on the crashes, resplendant with statistical significance tests…

I was planning on buying a Xbox 360. But there has been a problem I have been seeing about the 360. It crashes, a lot. This changes my mind on buying one.
Are you crazy your missing out. I have about 14 friends including myself who got the XBOX360 and no signs of crashing. I dont know how long these guys have been playing theyre 360 but my 360 is perfectly fine. I play mine about 5 hours a day and mine is fine. Remember these people havnt started making compliants after about 2 days since the 360 launched so imagine how many hours they have played it, or days.
PS:Playstation 3 doesnt have a chance theyre releasing PS3 late so they can see what the XBOX360 will launch as acseceries so they can do the same thing.
I played mine (PGR3) for about 4 hours until I had my first crash. I got the red lights in zone 1, 3, and 4. According to what I can find on the ‘net, that indicates an internal failure of some kind. After an hour or so the console worked again (with a different game).
Going to try to do some testing this afternoon to figure out exactly what is causing it. My power supply is up off the ground on a non-covered shelf…so airflow shouldn’t be a problem. Hmm.
As far as “changing your mind” on the Xbox, it’s not like you can run out and buy one now anyway. Hopefully by the time they get the next batch of ‘em out the door they can fix it. Hell… my original Xbox needed the replaement power supply after what, 3 years? As long as they fix it I don’t really mind. It’s a really bitchin’ piece of hardware. The graphics are simply amazing!!!
OMG this is bs ive had my 360 for about 6 days and now it starts crashing it the ring of light flashes red in big red circle this thing is bs hopefully ps3 will fix these things at there launch and set a nice supply of betas to sum testers so they can fix there probs but this system is OK and yeah my power supply is like a grey from what i see voodos is dark grey or black??? TWO dif power supply’s?? Hmm Microsoft conspiracy any one
Hey people
Does anybody know exactly when the 2006 batch of 360s will be released? I’m thinking they will have all the bugs worked out by then. Thanks
recieved my box dec 31.Happy days! not a problem first day I played for 18 hours PDZ and PGR five friends and da box soldiered on regardless.
If you can prop the power supply in a corner as heat will rise and pull the cool air in faster or if poss put it on your window ledge as this is the coolest place in the room not the floor (keep of carpet)
Release date for the 2006 batch as I and many boxalites have been told is around 3rd or 19th of march
Call me stubborn but the hell if i’m going to go that far out of my way to make sure something like a power supply gets any special care. thats like saying “this new tv so-and-so just came out is awsome, but the remotes dont work half the time so you have to get up and change the channel. idk just seems like an unessary hassle.
had my first crash…they should rename the “ring of lights” the “ring of death”…and is the console itself supposed to run so hot? it seems like mine has always been very hot (for a game console) and loud (fan) but since mine is the only one ive played i have nothing to compare it to.
my name is shane and my xbox 360 has been working fine and no overheating all i have is it sitting on a table right by the wall. it is not having any problems so if any bodys has any problems plz e- mail me i will help you guys with any problems…….______ok thanxxx

hi i bought an xlocks 360 on march 10, and played it played fine for the first day. then next day it started to freeze on me after about 5 minutes of gameplay, its strange cause the power supply wasnt warm at all.
dont buy this peice of junk untill they get the bugs worked out, trust me, its a really expensive paperweight.
ok mines doesnt freeze either it jsut wont start the firrt time i have to turn on and off like 10 times htne it iwll work lol only problem im having
HHHMMMmmmm…..I have started to have the dreaded problems that I’ve read about so many times. I thought I wouldn’t be one of those guys, surely MY system would work. Well, I got the whole Shebang. 1st-Error message E71/2nd-basic degrading screen with freezing/3rd-System unresponsive. It seems like it is an overheating problem due to the fact that I can play it for 15 minutes the first time, 10 minutes on the second, and 3 minutes on the third. Then the system won’t come on period. What a sham.
ive had my xbox360 since xmas. ive had no problems for the 3 months ive had it. i just bought oblivion, and i have been playin it 9 hours at a time max. it froze twice but i just turned it on and off. my brother tried another game and it was freezing within 3 minits and then the red light came on. the xbox was not hot but i did not think 2 check the power supply. im gonna try raisng it off the ground later and see if it works
My 360 has worked fine but has only just started to crash on pdz for some reason, but the 360 is a great console but pdz just doesnt seem to like it. lol
they r **** dont buy them they have a ring of light how do u fix it
I can’t believe my posts got taken down, what a bunch of BS… It was really therapeutic for me to vent my story online, only to have it dashed a few days later!!! damnit….
The short version… I waited in line for 12 hours at a Best Buy in VA…. I bought 3 of the consoles, sold two of them on ebay for a ludicrious amount of money… (just shy of $900 apiece) and you better believe I’m doing it again for the PS3… except no waiting in lines this time… ANYHOW…
I enjoyed 5 blissful months of h4rdc0r3 g4m1ng!!!! lol… all the while I was pitying the poor people that got the bad consoles…. and then… the unthinkable…….. As I’m cruising along with my gamerscore well about 10,000, my xbox360 freezes in the middle of Far Cry Instincs… The screen is jumpy, there is some serious artifacting on my lovely LCD, and there is an unhealthy beep/buzzing sound eminating from my speakers……. not good…. I have heard the horror stories, and I immediately take appropriate action. I move the console to the table top, and set the power supply on edge to ventilate all 6 sides… I even went so far as to put a small fan behind the console to pull the hot air away… and…… power……… game on….. good to go……………. I played for only 30 minutes….
I was filled with rage… I went online and downloaded the “How to disassemble your xbox 360 guide” and began the process… I don’t recommend anyone do this, but I was desparate to cool my baby off… So, WITHOUT removing the flashy little MICROSOFT sticker behind the faceplate (which would definitely void the warranty since the sticker sits directly on a seam in the chassis) I managed to get the back of the console open, and separated about 4 inches… enough to surely increase air flow and cool things off. To my delight, I was able to play, and play, and play… no freezing, no artifacting… nuthin… Things were perfect…. for about… 90 minutes… LOL,,,, And then……… *BUZZZZZZZZZZ* EEEEEEEEEK* FREEZE*ARTIFACTING* PWNED!!!!!!!!!!!!!….. Yeah… I got serious issues… So, I could only play for 5-10 minutes at a pop after that until finally, the whole thing just quit… I went to turn it on one final time, and I got nothing but 3 red LEDS aroung the almighty “RING OF LIGHT” in sectors 1-3-4… From what I’ve read, this is indicative of an “INTERNAL HARDWARD FAILURE” NO WAY!??? :-\ So, luckily I had my 2 year replacement plan from Best Buy, and I quickly got on the phone… It turns out, I would have to send it back to their warehouse, and about a week after they get it, they will mail me a GIFT CARD! for the purchase amount… not even another XBOX360.. just a lousy stinkin’ gift card!!! WTF!!! Like you can just WALK INTO A BEST BUY, and buy an XBOX360 PREMIUM BUNDLE!!! GTF outta here!!!!!!!! So, option 2… I called 1-800-4MYXBOX… but seeing as to how my console has been at my house for 5 months, it is definitely beyond the 90 day manufacturer warranty period, so I held my breath, and explained myself to the ENGLISH SPEAKING AMERICAN on the other end (bravo! microsoft.. bravo!) this fellow didn’t ask how long I had the console, he didnt need any warranty information… it was smooth as silk… I expalined my problem, and my own troubleshooting (minus the disassembling part… lol!) and without a hitch, he setup me up with an order number, and I should be sending my xbox back to MS in the next day or two… SO… to all of you out there with a PERFECTLY FUNCTIONING XBOX 360..> BEWARE!!!!!!!! It COULD HAPPEN TO YOU AT ANY TIME!!!! But… Microsoft xbox360 support truly impressed me, so remember that number… 1-800-4-MYXBOX… GOOD LUCK!!!!

I got an xbox360 on Saturday. It started freezing after just a couple of hours of use. And it’s so noisy that it drowns out some sound effects and is not suitable for listening to music. What I don’t understand, is why do people put up with this ? I am asking for a full refund. I don’t want to get a second crappy thing as replacement with the same story repeating itself soon after.
Well, I really enjoy the games that are out right now. I can honestly say that the xbox360 has the best lineup of games ever seen in a launch window for a console. GRAW is a blast, OBLIVION is simply amazing… I played the HELL out of PDZ, and PGR3 has some of the best online racing features ever… I’d be selling myself short to just get a refund… MS has acknowledgd the problem, and is paying to have it shipped and fixed… I’m ok with that.
thats what i get for switching to the xbox.been a playstation fan since it was released and bought a ps2 as soon as it came out.now i got my tax returns and got greedy and impatient and bought my “premium” 360.worked for a whole week yay! and then the freezing….gray screen no sound nothing.oh and best buy mysteriously never gets any to replace mine.wtf?they offered to reund my money but then i have games i cant play.im sending it to texas through that xbox number and they better fix that ****.spending that much $$ it should run for enough time to beat a singl game and without erasing my friggen saved game right off the hard drive.im sorry sony i should never have doubted you….
I have been lucky enough to have my xbox since a little after xmas. I admit I don’t play all that much (well not as much as I would like). I am playing Oblivion at the time and it has froze up a couple of times I turn it off and no big deal and I keep playing. Now I run into the problem of every time I hand in the Umbra sword about 5 sec afterwards it freezes up on me. I returned the game because it doesn’t freeze up any other time. I poped in the new game and same thing it freezes. Anyone have any sugestions?
Just wanted to comment as well – got my 360 about a week ago. I absolutely love it, and it’s been a ton of fun playing Oblivion. But I was wanting to comment that I too have been experiencing some locking up within the game. Last night I was able to play it pretty good when I was walking across the world and goofing around in a dungeon, but then it froze up when going into the items menu for about 10 minutes. The night before, it was in town when I was walking around going into shops – the freezing would happen more often when I tried to access the menu, or talk to shop owners. It’d resume after a minute or so – I’m assuming it’s because it’s trying to figure everything out? This game is huge and amazing – I think it’s awesome and I’m able to play it pretty well. But I’m wondering if anyone else has figured out a way around the freezing issue in Oblivion? Or if I’m just nitpicking? Seems like all the reviews I see of Oblivion, they say it’s very minor loading and jumping of frame-rate. What I’m experiencing is more serious. But again, I love this game. Loved Morrowind on Xbox. I just want to know what the deal is.
I have had this same problem as of yesterday. I have had Oblivion since the day it came out and all of the sudden I am getting nothing but freezes to the point that the game will not even load for me now. I am not sure what to do now… I did not save the receipt and I know that it is to late to take it back to Gamestop anyway. Has this happened to anyone else?
This is an interesting problem, as my brother has a 360 and his own disk of oblivion. He said his has been working fine – I took my disk to his machine, and the disk seemed to work fine with his save data. So either there is something wrong with my machine (every other game works perfectly, and the xbox itself seems to work fine too – only Oblivion freezes and lurches around), or my save data has something wrong with it? I called xbox tech support, and they said they have some issues with Oblivion, and can’t do much about it until a patch comes out. But they said maybe I could take the game back and get a new disk from the retailer, but it may still do the same thing.
Oh, and xbox support said something about holding the A button down when having a problem, and that it may help it be slightly better??? Does this make any sense to anyone?
on saturday i was playin pgr3 on my 360 like i have played it any other time, it started to freeze on me, i thought that it was the disk so i tried pdz it still frooze so i tried n4s same thing happened so i turned it off and left it till yesterday now when i go to turn my 360 on all i get is a blank screen and 3 flashing red rings, ne 1 kno how i can fix it as my warranty is up ?
I think I have the Oblivion problem worked out – not sure if this will work with other games? But you may try it with Oblivion to see if it helps your freezing and lurching problems. Called Xbox support (they are extremely helpful by the way – absolutely went out of their way to help), and I got the following:
Oblivion uses the xbox 360 hard drive extensively to cache (copy and reuse) game data. This helps optimize all the loading that the game does. According to xbox, it has been found that in rare cases some of the 360s cache can get fragmented, and shows itself by the game taking a long time to load anything. To help possibly solve this, reset your xbox, hold down the A button as the game is booting up. (They said that any button would actually work) and the hard drive will clear the cache and create a new one. Once the Bethesda logo is seen the game is loaded and the cache should be cleared. Doesn’t effect the game or save data in any other way.
I tried this last night, and had no problems playing Oblivion for the two hours I played it. Man, that felt great! My hat goes off to the Xbox team in being so helpful and their personal support.
Just got an XBOX 360 few days ago, was not expecting ever to get one but recieved it asw a gift so what the hell. I opened it yesterday and played 3 games on it so far.
Ghost Recon-which freezes half an hour in
Top Spin 2-which freezes around 2 hours in
the worst of all is Friday night fights. I cant even go a single minute without the machine locking up. the machine sits in an airy area so I dont see a problem. the tip on this page doesnt help. it seems the machine cant handle the games….i never wanted a 360 but now i wish i never even got it for free, no fun at all playing anything
my xbox keeps on freezing every time i want to play it even frezees on the dashboard screen and nothing else happens not even an error message what can i do to get it repair
my 360 is fine, PDZ and GRAW all work PERFECT but i only got bout 2 weeks ago. oblivion on da other hand, is fine, but when i get to this specific place (the exact same place all time). well see im stuck on a ship out a sea, killed the bandits who took over, took the leader prisoner, i saves the game,. then the owner sasy go get some rest, so i do, i get to the bed, rest and when about to wake up, full blowen CRASH. when eject disk pic still on screen, No red ring, Still green. there are no previous saves. no way to do anything else.
so i reset and trys again, same, same … same stc.. i havent try the cache thing yet but will. This problem really bugs me.
have had my 360 for 3 wks now have played call of duty2(it froze) played outfit(it froze) played modern combat and guess what it froze too.the only game that hasn’t froze is halo 2 an old game why the hell did i spend 499.oo dollars to play old xbox games!!!!!!!!!!!!!
lol.. sounds like this xbox360 shiz really sucks. I was gonna buy one next week too… now i think i’ll just stick with xbox old school.
Microsoft –> Stop releasing JUNK before it’s ready for the market.
Thanks
My xbox 360 kept freezing up so i called microsoft, they told me to send it in for repair, a week later i got a differnt one back and it does not even read disks at all i am now sending that one back, not very happy with this system i only had my first xbox 360 for 6 months.
My 360 froze last night, whilst I was playing Call of Duty 2. I turned it off and on again. Unfortunately I lost my last seve point, I was annoyed as I wasted 30 mins game play. I’m wondering if this will be a regular occurance?
i have problems too but just when i play xbox first titles, any other game in my 360 runs great no problem and no freezing i will try the metod of the power supply but i thing this treat is deeper not as easy as just lift the power supply up.
I have had four Xbox 360s…. every single one has done the same thing.. this system is making me mad…. everytime i turn it on the screen goes green or grey or red…. or any other color thinkable… luckily Microsoft keeps sending me knew ones…. and they send me free games… cuz it has happend so many times… but still GET IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME!!!!
I am playing Call of Duty ok now, there are no freeze up problems so far.
you all got problems! unlucky! only problem i have is going online with GRAW and trying to play dry dock, on the loading screen it just freezes!!! im alright with that seen as im not much of a fan of that map! i bought my 360 in april and ive done the achievment on GRAW where you play Multiplayer on xbox live for at least 8 hours straight…. i done that without a problem….i leave my 360 on the middle of my shelf with nothing on either side of it and i leave it standing up.. (better airflow) and i just leave my powersupply near the edge of the shelf…. everyone is saying PS3 wont have this problem because it will learn from 360.. but seriously they got a major problem as it is already! like WTF is up with the look of it? it looks like a cheap bread bin!! and the controller… is like a over size banana…
PS3 is going to be released late which means the 360 is estimated to sell another 10million consoles… for once PS hav meet there match and they got a hard job to even come close to the quality and power the 360 as to offer!
i just got thisstand for my 360 that has a fan at the bottom of it(it’s made be pelican). the thing is absolutly silent.ive been playing oblivion for 5 hours now without a single freeze!!!!!
I have just bought Oblivion as well and during the start up when first loading, the sound keeps fragmenting in 4 second cycles. When the menu comes up, the music plays fine but when you go further and start a new game and it follows into the first intro scene, the music plays for around 4 secs then pauses and then plays for another 4 secs constantly. I have checked the disc and it is immaculate with no scratches, so I am led to assume that this is also a cache issue…. Has anyone else experienced the same problems? To date I have had no problems with FN3 Call of Duty2(except for the fact that when I was playing the career mode it wouldnt save and advance through missions.) And about that holding down the A button to reset the Cache.. Well… If its works…it has no effect on my machine.
I just bought a new xbox and the POS froze up on me after only 30 MF minutes of playin it. I looked on the net to see if anyone knew what 2 do and on gamespot.com they told me to hve the power cord dangle in the air using string to let the heat flow out of it better. I tried this and i played it for about four hours straight. Then the next day i turned it on to play it and in the next five mins it freezes on me. Im just f’n pissed the system is tight as shiznit but the damn thing just keep freezin.
first i found this site and i was like oh is it power supply that overheats? so i tried lifting the power supply of the ground. i could play the demo i downloaded (Planet Lost) without crashing, before it crashed like everytime
so i played the demo intense made alot of explosions ya know, played the 2 levels without problems, so i was like cool its fixed, but when my cousin went over he played the demo again, and ya know what xbox frooze up again!, so i called microsoft for the third time! and now they gonna send me my THIRD BRAND NEW XBOX360 !! way to go m$, and ill bet all my saving money on it it wont be fixed!! , you guys have to help me out
oh i forgot to NoKoZaIkU -> dude put your xbox360 on 60hertz its in options had that problem aswel, it should be fixed, but also you will probably get alot of disc read errors like i did! and game freezings. ciao
I can’t understand how microsoft can ignore the problems with the xbox360. I have emailed them to complain but have not had a reply. I refuse to dismantle my Xbox360, hang the power supply from a piece of string or alter my power supply. The Sale of Goods Act says that the goods should be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described. Because the Xbox360 crashes and freezes so frequently, It contravenes our rights as consumers. It’s a real pity because the games are exellent and online is such good fun. However, the freezing problem is beginning to outweigh the entertainment value.
For you Oblivion users, clear your cache. power off xbox and during startup hold down the A key. If wireless controller, get it linked asap and then hold down A. do so until oblivion bethesda screen appears then release. This will clear your cache. Oblivion was pissing me off until I did this and now its smooth as ice.
I got my 360 on christmas. Its been about 6 months still no freezing, but when im playing 4 about 10 mins my controller(not wireless) shutsdown and the meassage to reconnect the controller comes up. but after 2 min my controller comes on. every 10 mins my controller still shutsdown. I make suer its plugged in good and it is but it still shutsdown but then it starts up. how ******. Any suggestions
I just got the 360 yesterday and had 1 issue with locking up, but about 10 issues where in the middle of the game (Oblivion) it says can not read disk, wipe off and restart. I just got the game yesterday and it is fine. I just hit play game and reload saved part. Anyone having that issue?
i’ve had my xbox 360 for about 3 weeks it has been working fine until one day i put in PGR3 and it says( to play this game put it in an xbox 360 ) like WTF !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this is an xbox 360 and it says to clean disk and restart after that i did clean the disk it took me into my dashboard and it just stayed in reading disk for about 5 minutes then it just said open tray. Any suggestions anyone i love this system i still think its tight.
Hey all, been reading all of your problems and i also share a problem with the xbox 360, the problem mainly occurs when trying to play old games, i.e. for the original xbox, and i know your thinking maybe he’s mad, paying £400 for an xbox 360 to play the old games, but thers only a few of the new games i like, although i have had problems with it freezing on the newer games, mainly nfsmw, and graw, thing is, i get a chess board effect on my screen with like the same colours and its really wierd, i reset it, and i get the whole three lights error, which is a hardware failure, get this, i have game saves for all the new games, which are nearly completed, and yet when i called microsoft, they said that it will all be deleted, i find this rather unfair, i mean surely they can back it up or something, but no, and they wont tell me how to back it up unless i go buy a memory card, which i cant cos im in the middle of nowhere with a blown up car (Blew me engnine, lol) so yeah, many problems with the first and now this with the second, all microsoft is good for in my eyes, is to crack thier operating systems, which is something to do !!!!
XBOX 360 = SERIOUS FREEZE PROBLEM.
ive had my xbox 360 a while now, i brought it with two of my other mates so we can play it mainly on xbox live, which for me doesnt work, but thats my internet problem, no worrys from xbox side. ONE GENUINE FLAW with xbox 360, it DOES freeze! i brought hitman blood money, played the first level, kept freezing a few times, so i couldnt get passed the first level, eventually i managed to get passed it but then in other levels it froze every so often. So, i exchanged my hitman game for another, what happens?? it freezes still, in the same way. so i thought it must be a faulty xbox, i exchanged it, guess what the game still freezes. my other games appear to be fine, but when me and my mates play call of duty on multiplayer on my friends xbox 360, it freezes every so often. VERY ANNOYING! the xbox 360 has great graphics and gameplay, but this is ruined by the constant freezing. also the xbox 360’s fan is way to noisy. i advise you not have your xbox next to your tv because the only thing you’ll hear is the fan in the xbox. i seriously think microsoft should have sorted these problems out before they commisioned these xbox’s. also, youll need a heat proof mat to put the xbox on, i can cook a fry up on my xbox after its been on a while. sort it out!!!
Reseverved an Xbox 360 during first launch and recieved it Nov 05. I’ve played Quake 4, Madden NFL 06 and Oblivion heavily until June 06. Suddenly within the last 3 weeks after being forced while online to download software updates, the 360 has been displaying all the errors listed in this post; freeze, wierd display and red power indication. I called the 1 800 number listed in this post and should be recieving a prepaid box in a few days to send just the core system (no cables or hard drive) in for an updated Xbox 360 core system. The gentleman I spoke to commented Microsoft is changing/updating many core system componets and there is no indication of power supply issues. I’m curious why the power supply won’t be replaced since many issues have been supposedly isolated to the power supply.
Hopefully I’ll be back online playing Madden 06 (practice for Madden 07) and Oblivion within 3 weeks. I never asked how soon I should get my replacement system but I will be able to track the Fedex package. Maybe the updated system will be more backward compatible. I’d love to know what Microsoft is really doing about 360 issues. If you have any answers Holla!

I dont know if its a overheating problem, if its permanent, or anything if anyone knows the correct way of fixing it please inform.
You said that M$ sent you a prepaid box to fix/replace the broken xbox360. did they charge you?
Cause I have the same problem and I got the box back in November and they want to charge me 125+30 to fix the issue. Please let me know what did you do so you can help me out.
i bought the 360 3 days ago it IS NOT THE GAMES BUT THE XBOX ITSELF THE FREEZES oblivion freezes just like morrowwind on the orignal n **** holdin the power suppy i paid 400+ for this **** microsoft can hold my nuts as much as i hate playstation i think ima switch
omfg this is so stupid i bought an xbox 360 and i buy oblivion and i play for about 5 mins and a screen comes up and says it cant read disc even know it was brand new !!!!!!! i am thinking it is probably overheating or something. if anyone has any suggestons plz tell me !!!! im not paying 400 $ for something i cant play – im gunna kill microsoft !!!! they need to stop caring so much about getting their console out before ps3 and start worrying about their customers !!!!!!!!
man, ive had my 360 for about 1 month and everything was fine for about 3 weeks then topspin 2 and oblivion tend to freeze now, pisses me off. i ahve my 360 sitting on a box, basicallly in the center of t he room with nothing around it, fvcking system gets HOOTTTT to, xbox was never that hot, remember how nicely xbox ran and how quiet and cool it was. this is next GEN!!!! mircosoft can sck my balls quite honestly, i called customer support and they said it may be a harddrive problem or s ystem. so im sending my 360 in for repairs, it better work
ok im trying to fix this thing myself before i spend $130+shipping and handling to get this thing fixed…so how do u switch it to 60hertz?
youve excelled your self this time mircosoft, this is obviously a mass issue with the xbox 360s, its seems to be common that they freeze and get hotter than a barbeque. thats what happens when you rush the release date. nothing but bad news for microsoft now, this issue should be made public soon i would of thought, because ppl wont be happy spending this much just to have it f*** up on u. really disapointed with microsoft. really really disappointed. i cant enjoy a game with the damn fan makin as much noise as a hoover, and if it freezes up 1 more time im gna shove it up bill gates ***. get your f***ing xboxs remade and better and you better f***ing swap it for me!!!!!!!!1
I have read about so many people with problems with their 360. I bought mine around July 15. I waited a while because I figured they would have maybe a second or third generation out by then.
I have had very few problems to speak of, all of which are with Chromehounds, which from what I have read, is due to the game itself.
I have my Xbox 360 standing vertically as the motherboard and all main components are on the left side (if one was looking at the front of the console) and it has nothing but open air for 3 ft around it. I never get any overheating problems, and my power supply seems to warm up a little, but nothing scary at all.
The games are lots of fun. Dispite the impossibility of Call of Duty 2 on veteran, I find myself laughing and enjoying the games far more than swearing in a violent rage.
I also got the 2 year warranty so if any problems do arise, I can take comfort knowing my investment is protected.
I can relate to everyone, mine just crapped out in me too. 130 bucks seems unfare to fix a problem that is a design flaw. and the 8004myxbox people are ******* tools!!
I got my xbox 360 when it came out. a week ago it gave me that red light error thing. my warrantee expired in june, i called xbox support and they want $129.00 to fix it. anyone have any ideas on how to fix it for cheap or tips on how to get another system.
I sent my 360 in once already and had a new one delivered to me and now this one freezes all the time during Dead Rising and Chrome Hounds could this be overheating on the power supply or just mircosoft is a bunch of cheap dirty rats trying to make as much money as possible as if Bill Gates doesn’t have enough of it. It helpful if someone could help me. Am I going to have to send it in again and I really haven’t had mine on for long period of times.
hey can any one help me? my xbox 360 broke it stop starting up and the red light turns on. i tryed working on it and it a giant metal box with plugs and a plasic case. and microsoft wants $130 to fix it. can anyone give me any idea where i can take it to get it fix cheaper then $130?
XBOX 360 is the worst hardware I have ever owned – I feel so stupid sellin my PS2 and working so hard to get the extra money to buy a XBOX 360 and to now have it not working. Basically I am facing the problem of the system freezing within a minute of being turned on – red lights flashing at times – man this sucks totally.
I hate M$ and I dont want a replacement I want back my f*cking money
my xbox 360 started freezing up occasionaly, then all the time, now it wont start at all, just show the three red lights, tried pulling everything off, cleaning power supply, and nothing, xbox wants $180 dollars to fix it. they’re ****ing crazy. thats nice customer service from microsoft, i havent even had it for a year, **** there are regular nintendos out there that still work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i thinked figured out what was wrong and fixed mine. I took a shop vacuum to it and vacuumed out all of the the vents any area dust can get it, now mine is working, froze up when i first put a game in it but now it is working fine. i bet if vacuuming out the outside doesnt work, take the casing off and vacuum it out more, i bet the fan is pulling in to much dust with those open vents and messing up the system, hopefully this is the answer, good luck, microsoft isnt ******** me for $180 dollars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have loved sony since it first started pumping out machines. I swore to god i would never buy a microsoft gaming console. Sadly, i broke down and had to buy the 360 because i couldnt wait that long for a PS3. So i spent about 700$ on the machine, some accessories, and some games, and what do i get rewarded with? A console that sounds like a jet taking off that runs at 400 degrees and freezes up every ten minutes. What a piece of garbage. My Sega genisis thats like 100 years old works better than this piece of trash.
I really like the XBox 360, but I haven’t got a single problem at all lately. The only problem was that it couldn’t read a game I have (Burnout Revenge) just because I changed from vertical to horizontal during gameplay. It scratched the disk, but it still works. I found out a solution. When you’re loading and it says “Disc Unreadable”, take the disc out, put it back in, restart the console, then go back to the same place where the problem happened (refering to the loading screen) and hold any button you wish while loading. I tried it, and my game works perfectly. I don’t know why, but it just works. I also have Oblivion and it’s pretty fun to play. I haven’t got any freezes lately and I’m hoping not to. Maybe it just freezes from overheating. I’m not sure because I don’t play 5 hours. I play like 1-2 hours. Then I just shut it off. Plus, you need your XBox placed in a well ventilated area. I think it’s smart thing to get the intercooler. My friend has it and he said it works like a charm. It cools down the XBox after playing for a long time (which prevents freezing). I’m going to get one soon because I’m scared of breaking my XBox. I had another problem with the controllers when it just disconnected automaticly. I was really scared if it was my console or the controller itself. Later I found out that I haven’t put the battery slot all the way in so it was loose. It was stupid of me. I feel pretty lucky to not have a defective XBox (I think). I’ve had this baby for about 4 months and it runs smooth as ice. I mean, if I get the Ring of Death, I’ll just replace it (I’ve read an article in “www.teamxbox.com” that if you have the “Ring Of Death”, they’ll fix the problem for free because it kept occuring). So I feel bad for the people who spent $130 on the “Ring of Death” problem, because Microsoft are fixing it for free now. Pretty funny, because they scammed you. And if you want to read the article, go on to the site and go to “Editorials”. Just scroll down and you’ll see it. And if the XBox that was replaced was defective, I’ll get a new one with a free game (also said in article) and sell it right off of Ebay with the game. And since it’s a new XBox 360 and a new game, I’ll probably get a full refund. And when I send the defective XBox(es) I’ll keep the HDD’s and all the other accesories and sell that to ebay. Which I get more money. And maybe more with the other games I own. Then I’ll give that money to my mom (which was her’s in the first place because she bought the 360 for me) and ask her to get me a PS3. It’s pretty weird how everything in my room, is what I haven’t spent a penny on. :]
ok im pissed off had my system for over 7 months now and it worked fine…..until now.now it freezes befor i can even get into the dashboard i did everything the websites said….nothing lol and its pissing me off cause this same thing happened to my cousins box and microsoft rippped him off he payed 130$ and they said theyd mail him a box LMAO no box and its been two weeks
I’ve had the Dirty Disc Error on a few different game discs since buying -and playing daily- my 360 exactly a month ago.
Recently I had a few instances where my G.R.A.W. froze during the Load screen of the 1-player campaign… again and again. So, I later tried the same game in Multiplayer Campaign, got beyond a load screen & about ten seconds into moving my character about, the system froze again. In both instances, I had to power the 360 manually with the console button, as the controller was unresponsive/ I couldn’t bring up the Dashboard. No Dirty Disc Error accompanied this problem.
I have just a thought, but no solution & maybe anyone who cares could study this idea. Could the problem be with the disc itself? I don’t mean the software on this disc, but the hardware OF the disc. I suspect this to be the issue, though its only a guess. …. An ‘educated’ guess because of the Dirty Disc Error. A possible solution could be a correction to the way the compact discs are manufactured, packaged, shipped, or all-of-the-above
I’ve had my 360 since February, and everything was great until last night, when it started to freeze, even at startup. No heat problems, as this is happening as soon as I start the console for the first time. Now, I have this red ring of light. Now that’s when I realized I’m screwed. I called the 800 number and they said I have to send it for repair. I found this thread and confirmed that this is the only way, at least for getting a new console, that will probably fail in the future.
i got the three red lights
the question in
would you be next?
I wounder how many % of the beta 360 has this problem?
My launch date 360 worked fine for some months, now its freezing all the time, even when playing halo2.
Calling M$ support for Scandinavia has wasted my time and money , but no reply….
This thing is ****…. It dosent matter if there is a game in it or not it Freezes almost immediately, I got mine as a gift a few days ago, but have no idea when it was truly purchased as that relative that got it for me is on vacation on a cruise. What can I do? does holding the powersupply up really fix the problem? for 400 dollars the damn thing had better learn to give BJs because microsuck can suck it! I am PISSED.
yo mom
Hey All,
I originally bought my 360 on launch date, and had no problems until mid-May when I got the dreaded ring of death! Called M$ and of course they wanted me to pay $129 for repair of what they said was a manufacturers defect!!! Well by the time I dot done arguing with them it only cost me $96.75 and I received a free game. I received the “new” unit back on June 25th, then it too died on July 13th. Called M$ support again, they sent another box, etc. Received what they told me was a replacement unit on July 25th, and that only lasted until Sept. 14th when the screen starting freezing. After spending 2 hours on the phone with them all the manager on the phone would say was “you are out of warranty, that will be $139 for the repair” she kept repeating this like a broken record for almost 20 minutes. So I got online and tried all the fixes I could find, and it kept freezing. The next morning I turn on the console and get the 3 red lights (1,3,4) and was about ready to throw it through the wall! I call M$ support again, and all of the sudden my unit is under warranty again? Imagine that, selective warranties depending on the supervisor you talk too. There customer service dept. is a joke, and if I ran my business like that, I would be out of business. So I will be on my 4th console soon.
Also, to the person who said they would get their “new” unit and seperate everything and sell on ebay, well you only ship them the console itself, and that is all you get beack (no controller, hdd, etc) and don’t be fooled when into thinking it’s a different unit because the serial number is different. I was told that I had received the same unit back twice that I had originally purchased, and that when they do a repair they change the serial number. So they claim I will receive a new unit this time (i’ve put a mark on the disc drawer so I’ll know).
Add a “me too” to the posts above.
My 360 worked great for the first 8 months or so. Two days ago, it started freezing in Lego Star Wars 2. Now it freezes within 2-3 mins of starting up any game – even demos.
Microsoft wants $140 for repair. Same old story – “it’s out of warranty”, “you should have gotten an extended warranty”, “there’s nothing I can do for you”. Best offer was to knock 25% off the repair cost – which still leaves it over $100.
I understand the warranty is three months, but from a business perspective, I find it amazing that Microsoft thinks charging people half the cost of a new console to repair a defective product is a smart business practice. Reading various online forums, it’s clear that this is a widespread problem. These aren’t routine errors. They’re defective, and hiding behind the three month warranty isn’t going to satisfy this customer.
Microsoft should stand behind its product and support its loyal customers by repairing these defective consoles without charge. They’ll surely make cover their costs with the money they’ll continue to rake in from the games, subscriptions, accessories, etc the affected customers purchase after they receive a repaired console.
I think you all got it wrong,
it seems that i have had all the problems you have with the X360 console today. RING of LIGHT turns red and some times my console does work, but after a while crashes
I started getting crazy for a while but after my dad’s girlfriend came in, He told me that my GAME CD’s are dirty even if it didn.t look like they were.
So i cleaned my GAME CD’s with a little bit of Dish washing soap and cleaned them with a verry soft Towl (the same towel wich you clean your Glasses with,if you have any glasses anyhow it must be verry soft towel)
Afte i have done that, I put my game cd back in the Console and everything worked pretty Fine again, it was unbelievable, but i think that if you are not really that kind with your GAME CD’s it will **** up your X360.
I almost sen back my X360 to MS and now i don’t have too.

360 PROBLEMS, POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS, & WARRANTY INFO:
–SUMMARY–
I purchased my 360 in late January 2006 and never had a single problem until a few days ago (September 17, 2006). Before I relay my experience I want to mention I have performed a great deal of research over the past few days. After visiting many different sites I was surprised to find so many other people had the freezing and red ring of lights problems. Unfortunately many posts are just rants, so I will try to explain the problem, my attempts to rectify it, and ultimately the resolution. It’s kind of long, so skip to the end if you want to read my epiphany.
–PROBLEMS–
At first I got the red ring of lights while playing a game of GRAW (not a big deal). I assumed this was due to a software problem, and upon rebooting my machine worked properly for the remainder of the day. Unfortunately the next evening my freeze problems began. The red lights no longer appeared, but my console would crash as soon a game would begin to boot. I could still boot to the Dashboard, but movies, music cd’s, and games all would cause the freeze to occur. It seems that some people have different types of freezes. My freeze had the following characteristics; dvd or cd would freeze within 30 seconds of starting, short vertical grey lines would appear sporadically, and a loud pitched sound would emanate from my tv speakers. Sometimes I could actually get through a game menu and start playing a game, but it would always freeze within 30 seconds or so (most of the time within 5 seconds).
–POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS–
There are many simple solutions you should try for both problems, such as checking your connections. Surprisingly (at least to me) Microsoft actually has some info on their Xbox support site. I find it interesting that the first 2 links on the site concern these problems (low failure rate?). Follow the link and look at the first 2 links.
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/?WT.svl=nav
Some people were able to eliminate their problems by clearing the system cache (hold “A” before a game begins to boot). I tried clearing the cache, removing all peripherals (including the hard drive and wireless ethernet adapter), and unplugging the unit from the power adapter for an extended period of time. I also tried cleaning my discs, moving my unit to a vertical position, checking the power supply LED during a crash, verifying the system time and time zone was set, and ensuring that the unit wasn’t already overheated (it was ice cold in the freezing basement sitting on the ground far away from all other objects except a random house spider and of course the carpet). None of these corrected my problem. The next step was to call Microsoft and diplomatically state my case.
–WARRANTY INFO–
Of course I never bought the extended Microsoft or Best Buy warranty. The standard 90 day warranty was long gone. After going through the same checklists from the support site with a tech I was informed of the dreaded $129 fee + shipping + extended warranty fee. When I asked if Microsoft had documentation concerning defective machines and the freeze problems I was immediately put on hold. The supervisor told me that my machine had to be purchased before January 1, 2006. I told him I didn’t want the service and got off the phone.
I had a tough time stomaching this expense when the problem was clearly documented by so many users. So I performed more research (to no avail). When I called back I received a different tech who had to walk me through the same troubleshooting steps. However, he informed me of something I have yet to see in another post. If your machine was manufactured before January 1, 2006 (look on the back of your machine for the date) if will be replaced free of charge by Microsoft. Not only this, but you will receive a one year warranty for free. This is vastly different information than I obtained on my first call. Armed with this info, anyone who has a machine manufactured before this date should be able to obtain the free repair and warranty. I read some success stories of people who complained and got the repair for a discounted fee or free. Most people said they got the shaft. My suggestion is to call back and get a different rep again and again and again till you get what you want. Complain until it’s more cost effective for them to repair your machine. Best of luck.
Yea i had the same **** happen to me i just voided my warranty because i took apart my third 360 in frustration. The good news is when i have it all opened is I can play a game for 3 hours without freezing as oposed to 20 minutes with it in the case. I wrote microsoft a letter saying i voided my warranty but i will not pay for the repairs for my 4th xbox in 2 months. Ill prolly just sell it and wait for ps3 cuz microsoft sucks ***
My 360 seems to be in between all yours, not bad or good.
It freezes up with no lights or anything and the fans die down in noise when it does. That has happened about 6 times total on about 5 different games in the period of 3 months ive had it.
Overall I say Go buy it, comps with the same cababilities cost more just for their graphics card alone.
That And I really think it alot to to with the disk, but really, live cancells it out, Its just Amazing!
My xbox 360 symptoms –
Mfg date: 2006-03-22
Purchased 2006-04-26
First symptom was occasional in-game lock-up with white noise, and many vertical white dotted lines on screen (once these lines were pink).
Then came crashes with a checkerboard pattern, both in-game or at Xbox boot/logo screen.
If the Xbox didn’t make it that far I’d get the 3 red rings at power-on (upper left & lower 2 lights).
—————
I took perfect care of this Xbox. Too many people are having this problem–this is a design flaw in the Xbox & should be repaired at no cost.
why didn’t i go to a site like this first. i have been to site after site reading page after page of this problem searching for the answer. all i hear is complaints. walmart won’t take it back. i don’t even want it fixed after reading this. maybe i can get visa to reverse the charges to my account. 5 days and its dead mgf date 4/30/06
Well, here I am…joining the ever growing group. I got the xbox 360 as a gift from my wife (just married) in Feb 06. I started playing it in March (after honeymoon) and yesterday night 6th Oct, 06 it froze while I was loading Test Drive Unlimited (I froze in shock at the same time). I rebooted directly on the xbox 360 by pressing the power button then it froze again after the game had loaded. It did this about two more times. It’s worth noting I had it on the carpet in our bedroom. Then I moved it to the vertical position on the bedroom wooden TV stand. I rebooted twice and on the second time it worked and I played for about 2 hours. Today 7th Oct, 06 when I got home I switched it on and it froze at the very begining while the xbox 360 sign was coming on. It did this a couple of times and even once showed the red rings of death! It was a hot day and the room was quite warm so I turned on the A/C rebooted a few times and it worked and I played Deadrising for about an hour with my room A/C running which co-incidentally sits just above and behind the TV and now vertically placed xbox 360. I then had to go run some errands. It is also worth noting that previously it sat in our living room, horizontal position on a wooden stand and the power supply block was on the tile floor. Good ventilation all round. I am wondering whether the loud (strong) internal cooling fun sucked up little fluff or dust from the carpet through the machine and is causing it to over heat??? Never had such a problem on a video game machine before. I am actually a PS fan and have had a PS 1 and still have PS2s and plan on buying the PS3. I never intended to get an Xbox360 but since my wife was kind enough to buy me one as a gift, I was excited and the games have proved awesome! Best to date! For example I have never had as much fun playing a shooting game as I have with Call of Duty 2. Simply awesome. Overall, the games have been top notch and definately give the feel of next generation. Which brings me to my dilemma, I don’t want to let my wife know that the present she gave me is about to kick the basket sort of speak. So if this one fails I will have to get a new one to play once in a while and will then switch primary gaming to the PS3 once I get it (knock on wood that it’s electronics are sorted, though Sony is usually reliable in that department). It’s just sad and in my case double sad, I don’t want my wife to know that it’s starting to fail and I was really enjoying playing games on the xbox 360 and I’m not keen on forking out money every 6 months for a new machine just to keep my 7 game collection going.
Well I’ve had my Xbox 360 for 3 months now it was playing fine for 2 weeks then it started freezing. The problem was that it was overheating so I took and old cooling fan off a server and hooked a 12 volt adaptor up to in and bam problem solved…… Well almost now the only problem is Occasionally it will freeze but what I will do is turn it off for 5-10 min let it cool down turn on my 12volt fan stationed behind the 360, make sure its getting proper air flow, and last have it on a horizontal surface supported by two objects on its edges to allow air from the fan to circulate not only into the Xbox but also under and above it to remove maximum heat and stop the freezing. i have also heard about the Power supply problem and well I recommend like many others just to elevate it off the ground and have it in proper air flow. Also if you want to be all professional you could buy the intercooler from ebgames.com or various other places like walmart and such. Here is a link to a crudly drawn diagram of what I have done to stop my 360 from overheating.

my 360 crashed less than 5 minuites ago… thanks for the help
I now moved my Xbox to a flat surface so that it is sitting horizontally, I also moved the power supply onto a table, I then vacumed the xbox360 and power supply by putting the vacum tube up against all the vents I could see on both the power supply and xbox360. Then switch on the Xbox360 and let it run for a few minutes before putting a disc in. I kept the A/C in the room on. Deadrising worked with no problems at all. Test drive unlimited froze a bit then I took it out and cleaned the DVD then put it back and it worked fine. I’m haven’t yet switched on the xbox 360 today but will do and hope it still works.
Worked straight a few hours ago. Will post if the problem returns.
I’ve owned my 360 since Dec18th 2005 & thought I was lucky, no problems. But within the last week I’ve started having these crashes where the 360 freezes but the lights are still all green. I tried the trick with an empty box under the power brick, no luck. I plugged it into another power outlet, nope. I disconnected the cables from the machine, no difference.
The problem is really bad when played Just Cause, it’ll crash after 5 minutes again & again. I switched to Godfather which had also been crashing a few times, played for 30 minutes then it crashed again.
Needless to say I’m not impressed with Microsoft at this point. I’ve been reading it costs about $125 to have it fixed which is not making me happy. There is no way in hell a console that is never moved & is in a totally open space should fail after only 8 months, it’s riduculous.
I’d been lucky up till now, my launch day PS2 never died & my Xbox was fine but this has been a very disappointing experience for me.
I’ve owned my 360 since launchday in the UK and it’s been flawless until a week or so ago when my 22 month old son gently kicked a football at it. Since then it crashes intermittently with the vertical lines on the screen. Sometimes it’s fine for hours on end, I’ve had it on for 24 hours straight to test the theory about the overheating power supply and it was fine, not a single crash, other times it crashes within a couple of minutes after startup, I’ve also had the red lights come up around the power button on the console a few times. I’m sending it back as soon as I can get someone on the support line who speaks English well enough to understand them. >.
I replaced two consoles because of a GRAW bug that gave me the red circle of death after the first save. Dead Rising started giving me disc errors after an hour or more of playing. Now, I just bought Elder Scrolls and 12 hours into it I can’t play for more than 5 minutes without a disc error crash. I’m in Anvil for the first time and I can’t do anything past the part with the theiving whores. Goddamn you 360 you theiving, teasing *****.
I won an XBOX 360 in an incentive scheme about 3 weeks ago and have been well pleased with it. Although after the first week I started getting power supply problems. After I had shut the 360 down and left it for a while it wouldn’t start up again so I had unplug it from the mains and leave it, this seemed to sort it apart from the power supply light glowed amber instead of green. I have made sure my power pack is in a well ventilated place but it still does it. I got used to having to do this as it wasn’t such an issue as all I did when I finished using it is to swith off the power supply at the plug.
However earlier this week I started getting problems playing Test Drive Unlimited. It was working fine right up until Wednesday when it would freeze up on me. It is almost like the disc isn’t be read anymore. I can open the DVD tray and turn the 360 off but the controller doesn’t work. I think my record is now 10 minutes before it freezes. It has done this to me while playing Uno on LIve too. What can I do? Is there a quick fix?
Here’s another crash problem. Have never gotten the dreaded ring of red lights, but every game has crashed at one point or another.
Madden 07 Hall of Fame Edition forget it. It’s a total joke.It freezes if you score, call a time out, pause the game.Error Message says disc unreadable. It’s Brand New out of the box.Thought the game was bad so went and rented one just to see. Same thing.
I even lost 5 hours of game play on the Godfather after saving through out the game. It went right back to where I started playing 5 hours earlier.
I think it’s time to copy and paste all the complaints about the 360 on the net and mass emailing everyone at Microsoft.
Maybe if enough of us do this they will get the message.
I have had my Xbox 360 since January and its only froze on CoD2 (which is a CD problem with Activision) and froze on Oblivion twice because i was playing it for 8 hours straight and it was really hot, i just turned it off and on and played for a couple more hours.
After hearing the constant horror stories, before anything happens to me, every time i turn my xbox 360 on, i put a fan on high pointing at the back sucking hot air away, and my power supply is floating on string atm.
And for the record, Xbox 360 does get hot, but I am very satisfied with what I have and if I had the choice, I wouldn’t change it, Sony isn’t my company.
Well red lights seem to appear when I boot up after returning home. So the console is definately not overheating at that point. Funnily enough after trying to boot it about 10-15 times it fires up. Though in-between the 10 times of booting I remove and replace the Hard Drive at least once. Once it starts I then leave it to idle on the dashboard for a few minutes then load up a game. Whatever game I put in then works with no problems for however long I play. Even if I switch off the console it will switch back on if I boot it up soon after switching off. However, if I leave it off for even an hour it will be back to booting 10 times before starting. I do get the 0102 error when the 3 red lights show so it is an unkown internal hardware error.
I’ll probably wait till it can’t start at all before doing the Hot Air Gun procedure on it which seems to work for more than 90% of the people out there who get the 0102 error.
I love my Xbox360 and love the games but this common problem is really unacceptable. Regardless I will buy the PS3 when it comes out and hope it runs better.
Well back to some Saint’s row then Test Drive Unlimited gaming!! (keeping finger’s and toes crossed:-))
For the last week my Xbox360 needed to be booted 10-15 times to start. Each failed boot ended in the 3 red lights. After it started I would let it idle on the dashboard for a few minutes before playing any game. Though it would play the game with no problems and for as long as I wanted. However, yeterday it finally failed again and even 50 boots would not get it going. So I opened it up and tightened the torx screws that hold the heat sinks which seemed slightly loose. After putting it back together it booted up the first go though froze once on the dashboard screen when I tried to connect the controller. however, after that it booted up all the time no problems. Now today is the real test if it can boot up at first go as soon as I arrive with no red lights then all should be well.
My take on this is there must be cold solder issues as others on the internet have said. So should it fail again I will use the heat gun method on it.
my 360 froze straight out of the pack, i bought it for oblivion and it freezes and does random things even while its not overheated. the funniest stale ive had is during the raid on kvatch in oblivion the title popped up and said press start over the gameplay. the game disk is fine ive tryed it on my friends 360 and it works. ive done some research and have found out that 1 in 3 360s will freeze while playing HD games but not everyone plays HD games so MS can get away with only 1 in 10 people realising that they have a faulty machine. MS arnt going to attempt to fix the problem until after the PS3 comes out because they can continue to sell faulty machines and games earning more money as well as releaseing the HD game Gears of war that comes out the same time as the PS3. the reason behind them bringing out GoW the same time as the PS3 is smart. the PS3 is going to sell out on preorders alone and so people will be instore with $1300 for the PS3 but will not be able to get one so they will end up getting a 360 because they already have the money, so they pick up a 360 and GoW and while they have the money a yrs subscription to LIVE and Dead Rising. so MS will make alot of money of this. so all you peeps with faulty 360s if its under warranty return it or if u must keep it you will be waiting until after the PS3 comes out until its fixed.
I love my xbox 360 and want to continue playing its games but untill Microsoft officially launches a new updated model and state that it solves the “5-6%” problems they only claim to have, that’s when I’ll buy another new xbox360.
If my current unit fails completely, I will just sit it out untill I hear of a new updated unit xbox 360. No more money to Microsoft till this problem is properly addressed.
In the meantime, since I’m NOT going to waste my money buying another 360 now to only pray it will work for months to come, I am going to use that money (with a top-up of course:-)) and buy the PS3 and take my chances there. The 360 problems look far from solved and there isn’t even a hint of communication that Microsoft is doing something about it (aside from replacements which themselves are not so reliable!) or has done something about it. I’m a busy person probably like many on this forum with hectic schedules. When I get home from a long day at work I want to enjoy some gaming! Not to worry whether the machine will fail again today. With replacement and current new units still failing I just don’t want to be part of this mess.
After 11 months my 360 gave out. It is being repaired my microsoft. I asked the tech guy if he could tell me the problem or is it on he hush hush by microsoft. The tech talked fast and said something about ev video or something along the lines. I too had gotten the ring of death and to my suprise microsoft is fixing it even though I have had it for 11 months. They told me I had a month left. It broke right on time. Since the system originally came with a 90 day warranty and microsoft has bumped it up to a year this tells me microsoft definately knows they sold us some bum ****. We all need to get together and file a lawsuit to teach them a lesson, not to be selling **** that does not work. Should have gone extensive testing besfore reaching the consumer. gh
Good News at last!!
Well let me start with the bad news first, the xbox 360 finally completely failed 2 days ago. So I took it apart did the Hot air gun trick and put it back together. It then could always boot up but also always froze whether at the initial xbox 360 boot logo or on the dashboard, basically from 0 to 10 minutes.
I then took it apart again and removed the heatsinks and completely cleaned off the original heat sink compound off both the heatsinks and GPU and CPU. I then put on new heat sink compound onto the GPU and CPU and put the xbox360 back together. Amazingly it worked immediately from the very first boot up till today and it is still working flawlessly. Just incredible. Every other fix I tried seems to have just been delaying the inevitable. Hopefully all should be well now.
My belief is that the hot air gun treatment fixed the soldering issues and then the new heat sink compound solved the heating issues, because it is running like how it did when new and the cooling fans are running quieter than before. Maybe anyone with more technical knowledge on heat sink & the cooling compound can expand on this!?!?
The original heat sink compound I found on the CPU and GPU was barely covering the chips properly it was scanty in areas like someone didn’t put an even spread over the chips. It also looked like it had been cooked. Whether the new heat sink compound I’ve put will deteriorate over time is something I’ll just have to wait and see.
Go my xbox back in December, played on it a decent amount until about a month ago. Started playing a lot of dead rising when it was released and got the freezing issue. eventually, 360 would boot and die within 10 seconds until it became instant ring of light on power up.
so i got it repaired by MS and i have been clocking in some good gaming hours especially now that double agent is out. surprise surprise! more freezing, just like the launch unit.
i have an intercooler on the back of the unit in a well ventilated area. the brick is sitting on top of a laptop Vantec cooler so that rules out the PSU. i guess ill keep using it until i get a ring of death and try for another replacement. :’(
well my 360 just died. first alot of freezing and eventually the red ring. when it would run yesterday it lasted from 0-10 minutes before making a clunky noise and freezing. i called 18004myxbox and the price for a repair is $140 and i get another 90 days of warranty! wow! what BS. if a console cant last 2 years then there should be some federal laws removing it from the market. i couldve used the $400 to get a real system that actually works.
isnt there some type of lemon laws for electronics?
hah!my xbox 360 crashed so many times. first it froze every 5 minutes, then thee red lights of death.and i have bought two xbox 360s and i am down right pissed off at microsofts product!my first 360 broke in ahalf hour and boy was i pissed!i have to send my second 360 for repairs and it costs like 125 bucks!screw you mcrosoft!
I FIXED IT!!!!!
alright i had the three flashing light problem just like most of you guys where i would try starting it up and it would almost automaticaly shut down. I unplugged all the wires connected to the system and did something i had not seen or heard of anyone trying. I bought it over to my 6 month old child and placed it on the ground….. then dropped to both of my knees and cryed out to the XBOX God, ” XBOX GOD!!!! I OFFER YOU MY FIRST BORN CHILD JUST PLEASE FIX THIS SPECTACULAR MACHINE”. i lifted the machine above my child’s head and kissed it, it was a wet slippery kiss, then plugged it back into its wires. i then kissed my wireless controller and started the machine. 12 seconds later the XBOX God laughed in my faced and the red lights of certain death blinded me. i plan on packing up all of my belongings tomorrow and moving into the woods to live with the animals .
GOOD LUCK
I had my 360 since January, and it got the Red Ring of Death in September. Since my warranty was up, I did some research and came across http://www.imxbox.com and decided to send it in. Got is back just in time for NBA Live 2007 and haven’t had an issue since! I would definitely recommend checking them out if you’re having the Red Ring of Death (or any issue) and you’re past warranty.
Purchased my xbox 360 in april 06. Died 6 months later (3 red lights). I’m glad I paid 1year extra guarantee. I got it repair, not from MS, but from other repair company. 2 weeks later 3 red lights again. I also think is the brick. It was way too hot when it happened. The day before I had a fan under and no problems, the xbox was with the intercooler. I played for 5 hours non-stop. I hope when it cools down it works. If not, this piece of grap is going back to the repair shop. Once is fixed again, I’m selling it and buying a PS2.
Damn, should have listened to the guy @ eb games and got the extended warranty. Now that i think about it, i might just trade the ******* in, get store credit, and then buy a new one with a 2 year REPLACEMENT warranty. Yeah, ill be out 100-150 bucks, but no waiting for repairs, instant replacements, and a controller that works properly. hmm…
they should have a recall on this i got my for 7 month and my system got over heat now i don’t know what to do no more
yea i agree with gilbert
XBOX360 does overheat. It is a matter of time before the heat catches up with the CPU. Those that have not had a problem…hopefully it will happen before warranty expires. For those lucky ones that have had the problem early on and have sent the unit back to Microsoft, well, hopefully it will work properly.
This should teach EVERYONE a valuable lesson….don’t be the first to buy ANYTHING because it could hurt you…whether it is a piece of equipment, technology, a vehicle, drugs, medication, and yes, the game console.
Microsoft need a recall. If, for example, toyota had 30% cars that would just up and die on you wouldn’t that demand a recall to sort out the problem. Everytime I boot up my 360 a shiver goes down my spine as I wonder whether it will fail again now. Why can’t they get it right. People are still buying new machines that then fail. I believe all the machines they have made so far WILL fail, it’s just a matter of time. If you check on numerous xbox 360 boards, guys’n gals, who’ve had no problems since the begining of the year are having failures now. I want to buy another unit but still holding out for a new hardware release. I really like the games and will continue buying the xbox 360 exclusive games only. For the rest of the games I’ll get the PS3 version or exclusive, that is …. whenever I manage to get my hands on one. I pray that teh PS3 is more reliable and that this is not a next-gen systemwide folly.
my xbox 360 freezes on the very beginning loading screen….anyone now whats wrong there?????
my xbox 360 has the red light thing going on but i dont know whats wrong im gonna try ur guys idea about the power core up off the carpet and put it infront of a fan
When i first got my xbox 360 I played it for about a half an hour before it said the game i was playing was broken. I took it back to the store the next day and it turned out that the game drive was broken and scratched all my games untill they weren’t usable. if you experience a problem that says “this game is not valid, please clean it with a soft cloth and try again” then you have a defective xbox 360. i got a new one for free that day and i have never experienced any problems except now Oblivion doesnt seem to work(the new one). if your xbox 360 is overheating try to buy the InterCooler 360 as it is a fan that hooks on the back of your xbox, disabling the old fan. this new fan lengthens the life of your xbox 360, is quieter, and never freezes. it is about $13-$18 but it is well worth it
hello its nov 13 2006 mine failed the freezeing 3 red lights the whole nine yards the 800 number told me to send it in the cost i have to pay to ship it too them and 139.00 for the fix what bs i should have stuck with sony has anyone have feedback when they got there system back from microsoft thank any info would help bye mike from ny.. when i get my hands on a playstation 3 good by microsoft forever
hey guys..bought an xbox 4 months ago, everything was fine, untill i put just cause in my console..sh*t started go bad from then..looks like a video issue, strange chessboard patterns and crazy sounds, including the red ring of death..first just cause, now all my games…AAAAAARFGH!!!
Well Im having the same Ring of Death problems as everyone else. But by reading through these post Ive come to the conclusion that it is an intercooling problem and that it may be fixed by you. Damn a Microsoft fix for 140 bucks when you can buy some heat sink for a few bucks and do it yourself. Just like a Microsoft to put out a product that fails and then try to sell you something to fix the failure you shouldnt have in the first place.
But the 360 has the same components just like any computer and just like any computer you should be able to fix it if its not a hard drive issue.
heat sink sounds like the most logical fix for this red ring problem. My computer did the exact same thing when I built it. a loud noise sounded and a light came on everytime I tried to start it up and it was a heating problem with the heat sink between the contacts of the CPU and the fan. Im going to try to fix my problem myself and Ill post again after I try. It is now 3 days before Thanksgiving, Ill have time to attempt this later this week.
xbox 360 christmas songs
on the third red light my xbox 360 gave to me one broken machine
im dreaming of a working 360
My son got an xbox 360 one month ago, the thing crashed, froze and wouldn’t start after only 2 weeks of playtime. He returned it yesterday to the store he bought it from (2 hour drive one way)!! They gave him another one, he got it home and the effing thing won’t even turn on!! Today he is returning it yet again, but is getting his $$$$ back this time. Microsoft can KEEP this piece of JUNK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
what version of xbox 360 do you guys with the freezing problem have, the premium or the core, cause i heard that the premium system overheats more than the core.
OK, I have had my xbox 360 for 6 months. It started freezing, then got the “red ring of death” called Microsuck and was told I am out of warranty… ok so almost 600.00 and not even 7 months later I have to by a new one or pay them 140.00 to fix the one I have… what a pile of stuff… anyway, no more microsuck products ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! no another red cent to them if this is their response to an obvious defect…….
I have a first-run 360, that I got on day-one. It has worked almost flawlessly for a year, then recently started locking up every few minutes in games and in the dashboard, it was unusable. I was going to send it back for repairs, but the MSoft troubleshooting page said I should try disconnecting all the devices including the hard drive. I disconnected the HDD and started playing Gears of War with NO LOCKUPS. I put the HDD back in and still NO LOCKUPS. Fixed, plain and simple DIY.
i got my xbox in march 2006 i took it home and played ghost recon and outfit it was working good 4 about two weeks befor it started acting funny.it would not play games standing up only can play games sitting down and dvd dident work anymore.i had stop playing 4 about month or two, when i went to play games games did not work no more at all so im thinking this is a waste of cash and dident want to buy any games for the system.gears of war came out i had to get it so i tried it on my system and it worked good 4 about 3 weeks but now in middle of game it freezes i dont understand can some out help me out cause i dont want to have to spend another 400 on another system
Hello. If anyone would like to sell me their broken xbox 360, email me at forensic6@gmail.com
My Xbox360 starting crashing today and as they became more and more frequesnt, I got the red light ring of death. This will be 4th xbox360 that has broken on me over a few months and will have to return it and get another one. This system is a HUGE pain in the *** besides gameplay.
i have had my xbox 360 for about a year and it freeses etc… and it has now started to flash with 3 red lights wen i boot it up it happened wen i changed the db settings from 50 to 60 but it still froze before that what do i do???
i don’t get it… my x box 360 keeps doing that lock up chess board like screen also, only the entire system freezes along with it.. because of this, my system does not even show that ” Red Ring of Death”. And i’ve tried everything to fix it… i unplugged my HDD, and it didn’t work… i unplugged everything and let is rest, and it didn’t work… i even tried changing the TV i’ve been playing it on, and it STILL didn’t work.. Does anyone have ANY other ideas to fix it cause i really don’t want to give microsoft money for the flaw in their system
I have had my Xbox 360 for almost a yr and the only freezing i suffered from is poor ventilation i finally gave in and moved it to the top of my Entertainment Center and then later i got the Rings of Death from the Fan add on i removed it power cycled everything and Xbox 360 is still doing great. I Know many people have had problems with the system but as you can see we are not alone PS3 solved some issue out the Box but they still suffer the DOA and other flaws. no one is perfect but MS at least makes me feel better when they address the problem.
Well, I have had my XBOX from when it was released in the UK and it worked perfectly for 10 months offline. I recently started playing COD3 and GoW on line and it worked perfectly for a month. the I started getting the crashes mid game and subsequemtly the 3 RED LIGHT boot up crash. The unit hardly ever works now.
I accept that the seems to be some fixes surrounding fresh heat sink, take it apart and tightening this and that, removing the harddrive, balamcing the power supply in a well ventilated area and I shall have a go at that but my view is this.
WHAT DID WE ALL EXPECT FROM MICROSOFT? LETS FACE IT THEY ARE RUBBISH WITH A WELL DODGY TRACK RECORD OF RELIABILITY ON ALL OF THEIR SOFTWARE PROGRAMS SO WHY DID WE EXPECT ANYTHING DIFFERENT WITH HARDWARE?
MY ADVICE, BOYCOTT MICROSOFT AND GATES AND GET A WII, I HAVE NINTENDOS THAT ARE 10 YEARS OLD AND STILL WORK LIKE NEW, THER **** KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING
BUY SOMETHING FROM GATES AND YOU ARE DESTINED FOR UNRELIABGILITY. HE IS A TOTAL LOSER.
HERE ENDETH THE LESSON
haha i agree
I’ve had my 360 since launch. I have gotten through around 25 games playing at hours upon hours at a time. The other night I played for at least 7 hours system linking with a buddy with no problems for either of us. All in all, just like with the orginal Xbox, I’ve had no problems.
I got my 360 for christmas and i played it for about 2 hours and after that, the freezing started and hasnt stopped since
and its not an overheating problem
when my 360 freezes, little red squares pop up on the screen in random spots. does anyone else have this problem?
Xbox has extended their warranty on 360s to 1 year. Call 1-800-4my-xbox. You got to tell them they extended the warranty or they will tell you it is out. I received my shipping box today to return it for a free repair. 11 months old, ring of death.

Just another example of microsoft junk. This is just the latest glitchy gadget released by the company. Personally, I can’t wait to get a PS3. I’ll actually be able to play my games.
i just called microsoft this morning and they are sending me a box to ship my 360 to them in. does anyone know how long it will take to get my 360 back?
xbox306 is a horrible product. I’m on my 4th console and the customer services and time it takes to get fix AGAIN is increasingly getting worst.
PS3 will be the clear winner of the console war in 2-3 years.
hi i have a big problem with my xbox 360 it wont play games for more than 3 mins nor will it play films no red lights tho just green ones and sometimes when you switch it on you get this buzzing noise and red dots havent a clue whats up with it nor can i find any answers on the problem can any one help plzzzzzz
i have a 2006 xbox 360 lol it is still the same it crashes in about 1 hour of game play
Here is my horror story. Bought the first 360 December of 05. Worked until Madden came out in August with no problems. Microsoft said it would be $130 to fix it. I said screw that. Sold it on ebay as is for $150 and forked over the other $150 for a core system. Bought it, a July 06 made model, and that was in Sept. January comes and the same BS red flashing lights starts up. Will work rarely for a few minutes, then freezes up the screen after beeping. Microsoft made **** products and they know it! They are lucky that GRAW is only available on 360 cause I would have said goodbye to Xbox and hello to PS3!
hi again now nothing just a black screen and the 3 red lights i heard something the other day wrapping it in a ttowel for 30 mins thus letting the solder heat up thus fixing the prob not sure if it works not sure if i want to try it but hey if any of you fancy trying it let me know how it goes……..i was also talking to one of my friends hes not got a xbox 360 yet but he likes electronics and says it could be a diode which trips at a certen heat which hes guessing the chip is a 85 degrees one and after long periods blows thus the 3 red lights hard wear fails this is hear say and not proven this is in my own words as what he said i carnt fully remember as hes a tecky and imm not lol anyone with ideas to fix the problem let me know also if any MS tecks r reading this post the fix and let us sort it our selfs cuz so of us r out of warenty thanks
ayyy
maybe a little late but the whole olivion thing is just an orverloaded cashe on the 360. the way to fix it is to hold the “a” button while the game starts. just keep holding it until you have the option to load game… that should if you got all the way through the publisher and title and all that ish shoul clear the cashe and make the game run more smoothly
yo today i played halo 2 good on my xbox 360 online for a wihile. i went out for a while and when i came back to play my xbox said ” This orignal xbox game has encountered a problem please visit http://www.xbox.com/support? does ANYONE NOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS PLEASE HELP ME PLZ
Bought a 360 at launch. After 6 months it started to freeze and shortly aferwards broke down completely. Contacted Microsoft who said they’d send me a label after I’d packed it myself. They never did! After speaking to the fourth person they said i should ring the courier and ask them to give me a label for my faulty 360. They refused and said Microsoft should provide it! A month after the 360 broke down it still hadn’t been picked up.
I told my local GAME store where i’d bought the machine and they said they’d replace it for me. GAME said microsoft were no longer making the cheaper core packages and probably wouldn’t be able to replace mine in the near future if ever!
Happy with my new console i played games thinking i’d just been unlucky on the one occasion and that now i would have the machine playing perfectly for the three years that any expensive piece of machinery should last for, if it’s been manufactured to the highest of standards of course!
I do not play games for lengthy amounts of time. My job tires me out and i like to be outdoors walking.
Today, after 4 months, the machine has started to freeze again. Just freeze at the moment, no horrible sounds or picture corruption, and no flashing lights. If GAME do not replace my machine, i will never buy another one even though i was singing the machine’s merits to everyone. I’ve really enjoyed the games i’ve played but i just can’t trust the microsoft brand anymore. It’s as simple as that.
I am a US Soldier stationed in Germany, I have had my XBOX360 since the original launch & for the first time without warning I received a red circle. I use my 360 for dvds, tv, (Have the multimedia remote), music, (5.1 surround sound) & of course my games (Which I play in most of the little free time I have).
So, I would Really Appreciate Any Advice on what to do to Save My XBOX360.
I got my xbox 360 for christmas and after several day it got the freezing problem. After like 5 minutes it would freeze. It is really pissing me off. I tried everything the internet said.
From my experience, as soon as you encounter freezing issues or the red lights, it’s usually down hill from there.
If you are still in the warranty period (12 months) then you should be able to exchange the machine at the shop where you bought it, like GAME did for me in the UK. My first machine lasted 7 or 8 months (i originally said 6 months incorrectly) and my second machine only 4 months! GAME, due to their rules could not be so kind this time so i had to ring microsoft. I dreaded this due to my previous experience. When i rang this time i gave them the whole history. I wasn’t rude or anything and stated that i didn’t blame any individual but rather thought that the whole system was at fault. I also said that a GAME employee had told me that he thought the service was very poor when trying to get your 360 seen to.
The lady on the other end, as expected, would not comment on the negative feedback from the net at all but said that she’d email me a shipping label. I did say thanks but not without telling her that i’d been at this stage before.
Anyways, i rang in the evening and about 3 hours later i got the shipping label sent to me in email. I printed it and then packaged my 360 in bubble wrap and secured it in a sky digital box, ready for pickup. It’s stupid that you can’t return it in the original box, but i guess microsoft don’t want people to know how many 360s are faulty.
On my next free day, i rang the courier which is UPS in the UK and they picked it up late afternoon on the same day. The system at the moment seems like it might just work. However, after two machines, i don’t think i will ever be confident in microsoft consumer electronics again. When the machine’s working, it’s great. I like the large choice of first person shooters available and i wouldn’t like to have to manage without the console. However i would not want to buy another one, unless of course Bill Gates goes on the telly and says ’sorry’ and ‘it will never happen again and if it does i will jump off the empire state building’. I’m even going to look for another box to parcel the third machine in for return to the repair centre, because i’m quite sure it’s going to break down just like the previous two!
Best wishes
Jez from the UK
you guys must all have faulty systems i bought mine on release have played more than 5 hrs a day for ove 12 months and i still have absolutly no freezing. i guess you guys just had bad luck
In the last week I’ve had 3, that’s right 3, separate xbox 360s. The original one red lighted on me when I first turned it on. Apparently the hard drive failed at startup. I took it back and the second one began freezing on me. I took that one back and picked up another. This one seems to work fine. It’s seems a little jumpy at times during some games, but if that’s the only issue the 360 has, which apparently is fairly normal, then so be it.
My 360 has frozen in the blue screen, in the checkerboard screen, and just flat out black screen wtf is wrong
I’m reading all of these posts and this is unbelievable. I’ve only had my Xbox for 35 days. And it will not load any of my game cds. 35 DAYS!!!!! And I didn’t get mine until January 2007. So there is obvoisly no 2nd or 3rd generation that has been realeased with fewer problems. It’s the same piece of **** they sold when it first came out. Those folks at Best Buy better be prepared for my arrival, all hell is gonna break loose if I don’t get this machine swapped out today.
ive now had my 360 since december ‘05 and after 14 months of perfect running, it has broken, started crashing, then the red light thing came on and now because ive had it 2 months out of warranty i have to pay £80 to get it repaired, anyone know where i can get it cheaper? dont get a xbox!!

ill be reading all these post and am very concerned , but the solution seemms to be the intercooler sistem??? I dont have my xbox 360 yet , but i just bought one refurbished on ebay and must be here tomorrow…
i just saw intercooler sistems for the x360 for over 100$!!! its necesary to spend on that??? WHAT IF I PLACE THE CONSOLE JUST IN FRONT OF THE AIR CONDITION OF THE ROOM????
so theres no heating??
i dont have mine yet , i just boughted on ebay , should be here by tomorrow , (refurbished one) If i place the console in front of the air conditioning of the room vertically will solve the over heating problem???
i play xbox360 24 7 and it was fine then after a month or so it wont even work, it sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am on my second Xbox 360 console already and once again today I got the three lights of death. For being backed by such a huge company like Microsoft, you would think the 360 would be better. But instead it is nothing but ****. For $400 I expected the system to be a good one but unfortunately I was wrong. I have had this second system for about two months and already it dies? That’s totally ridiculous. Not to mention that the games, though they have great graphics, have nowhere near the same amount of features that the regular Xbox versions have. You can’t even do fantasy draft in a season of Madden? That’s also garbage. Not only that, but when you send the system back to Microsoft to fix it for free, they return to you an old, ****** system that has been refurbished and will probably break again, leaving you with a worthless console and no more warranty. Way to go Microsoft.
Hm mine crashed after 14 months, I got the cursed red rings. I still dont know what caused it, but it sucks. The most unfortunate part being that the one year warranty I purchased with my Xbox expired a mere 4 weeks before it died. Now I have to pay the full price to have it fixed. I’m only angry because I have to pay for a company that ive supported for 3 years and payed them at least 2000 dollars across games systems and downloads. They should come public with this issue and stop lying about it only being 3-5 %.
hey man i need to talk to you about the system, add my msn minime_rules_99@hotmail.com
wat the hell is goin on! i got the same 3 lites. then i unplug it for a while, the next day it works. It works for a couple days, then the same damn lites come on. What the hell microsoft way to make a peace of **** this bad. You should pay us to get it fixed because it shouldnt be broken in the first place. How the hell am i supposed to fix the problem i even bought the inter cooler and the first 50 sec. it freezes. Then the lites came back.
here DAVIDCLASH dont buy inter cooler off ebay thats a rip a got mins for £20 and is lowerd to £15 now
dont buy that intercooler its not worth that since u can pick 1 up for £15 out of the store eny ways they replaced ma box and its going gd for now !
Brendan, call support and explain how the system failed just outside of warranty, my system started to freeze up at 13.5 months. I called and was very nice to them, the replaced the system for me, no charge. explain how you use the product and subscribe to live, and you are dissapointed with the situation, and see if they could repair it just outside of the timeframe. they might have an unwritten grace period.
Good luck.
Matt
Got my 360 in november and just recently (the last 4 days) I’ve been getting the ring of death (sectors 1, 3, & 4)….error code 0102. It would stop working and then just start again after a while. Last night it just wouldn’t work at all so I unplugged everything and left it all day today. Tonite I tried it again and still got the ******’ lights so I decided to try something, I turned the system off and then kept my finger on the power button when i turned it back on…..seems to be working now.
It’s still well within warranty so if it starts acting up again, I’m caling best buy.
I bought my XBOX 360 Dec 2006 and from day one when a DISC tray was opended to insert another disc I felt wow..these things sure get hot.
So I bought a FAN from Walmart and set it on top of the 360 and great no more HOT disc and the unit runs cooler to the touch.
Well April 1st 2007 wouldn’t you know it…. freezes up during a couple minuets of game play..then freezs up on power up…then the three red lights, power up freezesw power up red light…..augggggg.
Power supply is fine…
Back to Microsoft…..look guys I am 60 years old get used to **** from ALL console makers.. no one is better then the other…and look at how many millions have been sold..these are electronic devices expect failures.. but why me…lol…..
I guess certain games would cause the 360 to freeze up. Has anyone had any problems with MLB 2K7?? Every other game I’ve played had no issues, but this one would constantly give me problems until the ring of death showed up. Cursed game.
I bought my 360 in Nov. ‘06 and have played most of the games mentioned hours upon hours and have had no problems.
I got mine for christmas 06′ and workedall the way up to last week. It was freezing with my sisters games but it was with mine. It wasn’t up until second week in May when my games began to freeze. I was so mad. It wasn’t until last week i looked up some information on the problem. They say it’s screwed up, so your supposed to call them. I’m currently doing tests using the towel method. I hop it’s gonna work because i dont wwant to pay $250 dollars to ship it and get it repair only to find out that i have to send it in another 6 months. Microsoft has to do something or people are just going to buy the Wii or the PS3. Dont get me wrong i love the XBOX 360 but this problem has to be fixed.
About the mlb 2k7, yeah, it freezez alot and i get random scratches from my xboxes which is wierd. I sent my 360 in after 15 months of no problems but freezez here and there, and the funny thing is i got the three red lights while playing mlb 2k7. then my firend let me borrow his for over 2 weeks now and today i got the three light while playing 2k7 AGAIN!! but then i try blowing out dust and i relocate my 360 in an open area and i played PGR for about a half hour then i played agame of 2k7 with no problems. Do u guys think its b.c the system is in a bad spot and needs to breathe, or is it the game or just the 360?
My xbox360 crashed today…. 3 red lights (hardware failure/GPU overheat), with normal playing time. About 2-3 hours a day(4 days per week).I read that the problem caused by the cheap solder that ms used in lauch consoles. The solder that connects the GPU with the motherboard breaks , so the GPU is no longer functional.
too bad
I got my Xbox @ launch it froze … got another one .. It has frozen … I have gone through about 4 Systems this being the 5 .. Man I totally like the Xbox system but come on now … this is getting rediculous … its funny to because I am not getting the 3 red lights of doom either .. this time the machine just stops after a Min or two .. I get the aka .. Rain Scene Freeze.. luckily I can keep exchanging but for anyone else I feel sorry .. Microsoft has to do something about this!!! and the Elevating power strips sorta works with red light .. but doesn’t do anything for “rain” .. you can also hear the motor inside trying go but just like a car engine after 100k it just whines that Errrerrrrerrrr… HopeFully they fix it soon
RIP my xbox 360 died today (3 red lights 0102 hardware failure)
#Tried new fans (talismoons) to keep it cooler when it started to crash last a few weeks back
#Tried re flashing the drive (hitachi)
#Tried towel trick (brought it back to life for around 8 minutes)
Now im gonna try throwing out of my f***ing window!
Moral of the story is only buy an xbox360 if your a certified engineer thats the only way you’ll keep it going lol
Well i got my 360 january 20th , wasn;t gonna get it but i did. It turned to be the best experience hav xperienced in gamin…. (xcept for the wii sport..the 1st time) wellit lasted all the way till mid may. Before it happened i stopped playing it for a week, Then reconnected it. Wheni turned it on, while the game was loading it made really load scratching sounds from the drive but it loaded. iT was nsf:mw. (av already cracked it but was just playin through again). Two minutes into the game iit makea s beep sound then freezes. Reset it a few time but the say thing happened then finally it starts up with the 3 rings of death. I reset a few more time but to no avail then i tried the towel method. And it finally starts up. I could load my conventional DVDs’ but when i put in a game cd those screetchins sounds pick up then the it eventually freezes. I’m in Nigeria and bought the game from a small store and rite here there is no returnin it. So i’m stuck. I can’t seem to hold out any longer. I did send it to a casual repairer but a results….
Wit all this don’t get me wrong i love my 360 , and the game, u simply can’t fault them even the fairly rated enchanted arms was a blast for me. I’m hopng m$ would seriously get some work done and fix this …..
1. This is a disgrace. Firstly I get the red ring of light. 1 month later it comes back repaired. 1 month!!
2. Today all games start freezing.
3. I want a full refund
4. I am switching to PS 3 for it is a more reliable console and quiter!
5. I am anoyed I have wasted so much money on this console.
my xbox frezzes on all games and i dont want to clear hard drive i get three red bliking lights no clue how to fix it
Yup, mine just started doing the checkerboard screen of death too. With a little crashing white noise crunch at the same time.
I got my xbox in december and had no red light BS then in june I got Mervel Ultimate Alliance I put it in and 9 or 10 min into the game I hear a buzz so I hit the power button took the game out and left it alone for I think 5 min and then I put the game back in and it said UNPLAYABLE DISC for anything I put in it and I never got the dam red lights microsoft can suck my……………….!
ok i got into phantasy star demo and played it for along time and couple days latr it crashes wtf i ask my bro he says to call xbox and have them send me a powr cord if that dont work im gunna scream at them till i get a new xbox360!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ive had my xbox 360 since May 2 years back i think, I havent shipped it in YET. It works fine most of the times. I get a few freezes sometimes everynow and then but latley it seems to happen more when ever i watch my dvds and then play my games. Some times i can only play for like 3 mins and then it frezzes. Ive got the Red rings of death ONCE but then i turned it back on and it was fine. Just that now i have to deal with freezing time to time and it bugs me cause then i cant play.
I have had my xbox since the summer of 2006. Occasionally the disc tray would not open and you would have to wiggle it to get it to open. It also would eat discs. This was usually preceeded by a loud scraping sound. I had to replace fight night round 3, phantasy star universe, dynasty warriors and a few others due to the drive eating the discs. That was still tolerable until yesterday. The system started sounding very loud and it made these strange clicking sounds when trying to access the harddrive. I turned it off and now it will not come back on. I get the red lights of death.
I was first worried my HDD crashed so I used XPORT to analyze the HDD and there were no errors on the drive. I also made a backup in case I have to replace the drive but I do not think it is the HDD.
I have had my 360 since christmas of 2005,so far ive only had 1 red light problems and a few freezes. After a red light i just turn it off, unplug everything, plug it all back in and turn it back on and i dont have any problems afterward. So far only one of my games freezes and thats TES Oblivion. And it only freezes if i do 2 things so far,if i use the dupe glitch and dupe something over 300 peices. And when i do the Clavicus Vile quest, when you return the sword Umbra and the dog statue leaves your invetory.Other then that my 360 has treated me well in my 2 years of gameplay and i pray it dont screw up now cause my warranty is shot.
i bought my 360 preowned and had it for a just under or over a month now. today i was playing dynasty warriors i just got it so i was playing it for a while before i started playing after leaving it off for a while and then the screen just went all green with vertical lines so i turnt it off and back on and then it said i have an error E 74 can any1 help me with this ?
Never really had much of a problem with the 360 and have had it since launch day. Did get an occasional freeze in arcade games but other than that no problems. However today I turned on my 360 and the game disc that I left in it said Unplayable Disc. I tried ejecting it and using a different disc. It didn’t work. I unplugged the brick for almost 10 minutes still got the same problem. This was totally unexpected and quite strange that this happened. Not even 2 years and it farts out on me. I don’t want to ship it back because I’m not paying the expense to Microsoft for repairs. I already bought a 120gb hdd online and waiting for that to ship as well as the transfer kit. Needless to say I don’t need another expense. Anyone have any ideas about this? I’ll try getting another power brick if it helps. It better…if not Microsoft owes me a new one! Free damn it!
I bought my first xbox 360 last summer in the june to july time frame at CostCo. For those that are not familiar with CostCo., they have a full satisfaction guarantee or your full refund return policy regardless of when you bought the product. Glad that is the case because 2 days into using the first unit, the rom-drive made a horrible noise and ate the disc. When we were finally able to open the drive door, the disc looked like someone had taken a grinder to it. Took the unit back to CostCo. and they gave us another. We started getting what seemed like overheating freezing for several weeks, until yesterday when the drive made some noises that only a blender crushing ice should make. Called CostCo. and they said bring it back and we will fully refund your money. CostCo. is not stocking the units in their stores anymore but are still selling them at their online store. We are now going for the Elite version but wonder how long that one will last. BTW- the game that was ruined by the last units crash is wasted. I feel that Microsoft should replace it but I know better than calling in to make this suggestion. I’d rather not get frustrated anymore than I already have with this unreliable product. Problem is that it is lots of fun while it is working. Good luck all!
dude u guyz have no life, seems like all u guyz who have problems with ur xbox play for more than 4 hrs. go outside or somthing! i have an xbox 360 and the only problem is that the fan is kinda loud but that doesnt bother me. plus u should have waited for the 2007 batch to come out, i got mine then and it hasnt crashed or froze even once.

hey guys,
i found with fifa 2008 that when ever i play it and it goes to the half time screen and it loads up anohter song it tends to make that clicking noise and then has the dirty disc error message.
So what i did was turn off the music in the menus and now i have no problems at all. Im preety sure its all the memory and cpu usage that would it cause it to crash due to the laser trying to find more data.
hey all
was playing half life two episode two the other day then i got vertical lines dwn the screen. I turn it off and have neva ben able to turn it back on as i get those mysterious red lights……
I was playing Guitar Hero 3 for about 5 minutes today and wanted to switch guitar controllers because one of the buttons jammed, restarted the system so the new one would be first player, but it didn’t start up, i just got a red ring in my face. I’ve heard about the red ring of death and thought i’d hav to send it in for repairs, i looked at ways to “fix” it, but none of them worked.
After about 10min i turned it back on and it seemed to work, but froze and gave me the red ring again before i could open single player mode . I hope i dont hav to send it in, i’ve had the same xbox for a little bit over a year and dont wanna put up with the time it takes to send and get back a new or improved xbox D:this small upset is the only one i’ve experienced since i’ve bought the system, and it wont stop me from supporting it!
just thought i’d share…haha
Some site that claims to be able to help you fix the 3 red light thing .. Not sure if it works or not
hey i know a way to stop the red lights of death for like a few hours or so….completely wrap your xbox 360 with towles and let it run for about 15 20 minutes….i did it and i put in mass efect…and i dident get to play very long because my xbox sucks as. im serious im not a spammer or want to hurt ur xbox. it seriously worked…put the xbox straight up and it has the problems less often 2.dont know how that works out tho but it does….peace
I purchased my 360 on the original release date, and now, low and behold, the red light ring of doom has reappeared for the 5th time. Not the 5th time on the same console, but this is my 5th console in 2 years that has died!!!! And MS seems to have no access to there old customer service records!!!! and they are not willing to compensate with anything! What a crock!
my xbox has just 1 light and its at port 4, i tried everything but cant seem to fix it any segestions?
HI! i have problem with my flashed xbox360. I want to play original xbox games on xbox360. I’ve updated console with newest update for playing originals on it, but when u put WWE RAW 2, that is backward compatible, it shows me an error: “This original Xbox game has encountered a problem and can’t continue” X.3921.0 B1884.0.
I really don’t know what to do here, i’ve searched every singe forum with no success, you are my final chance
If’ve you have any suggestions or solutions, please write to me on email: matjaz.lesjak@email.si
I would very appreciate your reply, thanks.
i got no red dots and i’ve had my 360 for some months now, played probably around 5hours a day, only matter is that i can’t seem to start any games, my console takes games like CoD4 modern warfare, halo3 and burnout revenge for dvds, unplayable discs, (not a scratch in them) and sometimes it just can’t read them… What do i do? U can hear when a games working, but even when it does (really rare) it usually fails and sais the game could not b read, try cleaning the disc/restard console, never works
I have had my 360 for about half a year now and just yesterday I began getting problems with it. I went up to the store and rented Call of Duty 4 and I put it in and after about 20 seconds of running it came up saying the disk is unreadable. after that i cleaned it and placed it back in and it ran for a bit more then froze. After that i tried to turn it back on and the 3 rings of death appeared. After about 20 minutes of leaving it off it worked again and worked for the rest of the night. The next day i got on and the color is extremely off I am getting a “neon green” color throughout the game. It looks as if night vision is on. I am not sure if the xbox is broken now or if there is anyway to fix it. Any help would be appreciated.
I received my XBOX 360 slightly over one year ago during the Christmas time frame. My first game, “Gears of War,” has been badly abused by my console; it is blemished and scuffed from the ROM drive. I have actually owned three “GOW” discs due to my console stating that “This disc is unreadable.” I doubt that I will be the last to say that it is not the disc that has the issue.
“Halo 3″ is the second game that I purchased for my 360 and, all in all, it has worked well. I have encountered the “disc is unreadable” error message a few times, as well as another glitch that prevents that game from loading between levels. (The resolution: reboot the console.) Otherwise, “Halo 3″ is terrific.
Now, I am working on “Assassin’s Creed.” First, I re-encountered the “disc is unreadable” error message. The, like others who have posted before me, I noticed the noise levels of my 360 increasing. (Fans? ROM drive?) Finally, the screen’s color began to become distorted; I noticed that areas of the screen, i.e., the video picture, that should be gray or white assumed a dirty yellow appearance. Finally, my video stopped working. The sound continues to function, as does the rest of the console, but I cannot play games and can only navigate through the Dashboard by memory.
I have researched all of my issues and spoken with Microsoft Customer Support to no avail. Most people report that Microsoft refuses to address the issue of the “unreadable discs” and the blank video unless you encounter the “Red Ring of Death” (RROD) problem. Otherwise, pay your fee and wait in line behind the no fewer than one hundred others who are having their consoles “repaired.”
My fear is that “repairing” the console will not permanently fix the issue.
Good luck to everyone suffering through these issues. The 360 is a terrific console when it is not causing its owners undue grief. The graphics and sound are terrific and, as a former Sony “fanboy” who swore he would never own another console unless it was another PlayStation, I have been truly impressed by the selection of games for the 360.
I bought my 360 to play the much advertised Oblivion because I loved Morrowind, and I was able to play it for a long time if I didn’t gallop the horse between towns, if I did after a while it would crash but I didn’t mind because it could be 2 hours of play I’d enjoyed and it was easy to start the game again. Anyway, as my machine was a virgin when I started playing Oblivion with no memory use at all. Doesn’t the fact that a bit of swift horse riding used to slow it mean that the game was too big for the machine? I bought another couple of games, Tomb Raider, Viva Pinata, they played fine, but when I went back to play Oblivion it was ruined. I’d burst out of the sewer onto the beach by the lake after creating my character and CRASH! I tried to clear the memory cache and I erased the game saves, no good…… I’d better stop whinging or I could whitter for hours, but I would like to say that I am very sad that we can get let down like this when we spend that sort of money, which to those without a job or who can’t manipulate their parents (nicely), is quite an investment. Especially if you add on the cost of the games. I also feel very unloved by Bethesda because they made a few add ons to Oblivion that were PC only. From now on I am sticking to the PC and I wont ever buy another consul. Even if it looks like Johnny Depp and can whistle Dixie while making tea.
Uhh…I’ve had my 360 since the start of 2006 and it has worked PERFECTLY until about september last year and I got the “Three Red Rings Of Death”
problem.I had to wait really long as I was kinda busy and had no time to actually go get a new one or fix it or whatever.
I actually wanted to go buy a new one but figured I could save cash by sending it in.
So I called the local M$ xbox team or whatever and they told me to go to Funan Center(I live in Singapore) and get it fixed..so I did, late december, and I had to wait in line for a long time, but it was ok and I went to challenger and searched for PSP stuff..but that’s not the point.
Anyways,I got my new 360,went home, tested it out and it worked fine..until about 3 days ago when I was playing SmackDown VS Raw 2008 and I was in a match against rey mysterio when i noticed the screen was like unbalanced..I couldn’t see the top of the screen and the bottom part was black.
It’s like a projector, you know the kind where you put a piece of paper on a screen, and aim a camera at it and the pic will be projected on another screen.
But mine is like the “camera” is a little out of place and it’s missing the top of the screen.
So I off my 360,and restart it.
Cue the disastrous music.
The graphics of my 360 was like…a really lousy TV with no cable.
It’s like the right side of the screen is on the left, the middle is blank and the
left side is on the right.
plus the screen is really wavy and blur.
It’s like when you first buy a TV,and there isn’t any cable, then some channels are like crappy…that’s what my 360’s graphics looked like.
So I offed it..on it.
Still the same.
And I did the same thing a few times more with everything having the same unclearness.
then i spotted some “System Startup” thing and it was really unclear so i thought it was like kindof a reboot.
Then when i clicked it,everything became clear..but still out of place.
then i pressed back, and everything was unclear again.
And sometimes when I press the xbox button it will be clear, but not all the time.
I searched for the problem and couldn’t find anything on xbox.com/support.
My TV is still working perfectly though,so I have no idea what to do…has this happened to anyone before?
ty.
my 360 keeps messing up the picture causing everything to look green or orange, or both.
You know its funny cause there are heaps of replys in this thread.. hey Microsoft! XBOX 360 is good, BUT FIX THE F*CKING HARDWARE ISSUES!
Heres my verdict:
Amount of games: Excellent
Xbox Live: Excellent
Console Llooks: Excellent
Console Hardware: Excellent
Now if you could please find a solution to all the major bugs in the 360, then I am sure we would have a much better console and also boost sales
Hi all.
Ok.. woke up this morning, turned on 360… started halo 3… then froze… looked down…nothing… rebooted… saw four red lights… restarted…nothing… after a little reading online… and personal ingenuity I powered it off and unpluged the cords… no progress… disconnected and reconnected the harddrive… a little progress… then I though that the fault code might sill be sitting on the memory module on the system… so I unplugged the power cord from it and left it for 30 secs… PRESTO! It WORKS… I think it was in reseating the HDD and Disconnecting the power to let the memory modules release the fault hardware code.
Hope this helps
I had my xbox 360 for an year now and one my favorite games is Madden.
everytime I play online it freezes in the 1st or 2nd quarter
what should I do???
i bought my a second hand unit which was probably a pretty bad idea. I’ve had some friends with second hand units and it seems to work perfectly fine. So i decided to take a shot. It came and worked pretty well for about 2 hours on NFS Underground. It freezed a couple of times but nothing big. i got it flashed and started getting more games ie Fifa and NBA. Here the machine starts freezing after 5 minutes of play which is very annoying. But the thing i notice is that on NBA, if i play 1vs1 which only uses one bot or none, it practically never crashes at all. If i enter a normal game (5v5, 8/9 bots) it crashes after 10 minutes. So i decided to check it out and started playing some 2v2 with 3 bots and 1 player. it crashed after about 30 minutes. The trend i notice is that the more bot is involved, the quicker it crashes. Call of Duty 4 didn’t even last the 5 minutes. Although at first it went for about 1 hour. Is this still a heating problem or would this be a processing problem?
Most xbox360’s from the day it came out up till 2006 had a hardware fault in them. It results in the ring of death. But they have fixed the problem, it is also quieter now.
Junk…I have bought two 360’s and neither worked…Never again will I buy one or give a good review.
My xbox just died on me, after 9 months. It’s the Elite version, manufactured a month before I bought it (August – 07). Beeps, and freezes, then ring of death when I turn it back on. What a crock of…
i got the ring of death on my xbox liek 3 months ago and the whole pwer in my house went off!!!!! damn
hello I have a Xbox 360 that I have owned for about three years I just started having problems with it like about a month ago it started to freeze then it started to give me the ring of death so I send it off and they couldn’t find anything wrong with it so they send it back to me so then I took it apart and studied the machine and fixed it by myself and got it back working without reading anything or help of anyone and its working really really good and even better then when it came from the factory

my xbox 360 only has one red ring in the lower right quadrant and i get an E74 error message. I contacted xbox support but they sed i have to send it in. Is there any way to rid myself of this red light without the hassle of paying money or sending it in?
my xbox 360 when i put in games, it says open tray and i have to turn it off for 15 minutes for it to play games
my xbox dosent want to play games but it dosent have any red rings ,and when I called costumer support they said I had to send it in but I dont know weather to send it in or not !! >:[]
send it in,or it going to mess up more if you wait
I have exactly the same problem- one red light and E74 error message. Is this fixable or do we all have to plunk down an extra $99 to MS after ponying up $399 to begin with…
I’ve had my xbox for a month or so and no probs…..but now when i play games its says that the disc is unreadable! even if the game is brand new…..my XBOX plays fable 2 for 5 min and then it cant read it any more!
