Command & Conquer: The First Decade

Posted in Classics, PC Games, Previews by ubersoldat on November 11th, 2005.

To honor the 10th anniversary of the Command & Conquer series, a series that pioneered in the genre of Real Time Strategy video-games, EA is releasing Command & Conquer: The First Decade. The First Decade is an all-encompassing mega-pack containing every title from the series, including:

the original Command & Conquer and the glorious Red Alert, to the poorly thought-out Sole Survivor and black sheep of the series, Generals. The box set will also feature a bonus DVD with a video interview of Command & Conquer creator (and Westwood founder) Louis Castle.

Although there is no official release date set for The First Decade series, the expected retail price is a moderate $40.

King’s Quest 1 & 2 Restored

Posted in Classics, Fan-made media, Free Downloads, Reviews by ubersoldat on November 5th, 2005.

Anonymous Game Developers Interactive (AGD Interactive) have successfully given a make-over to the first two installments of the legendary King’s Quest series. In their remakes, they have enhanced the graphics from 16 colors to 256 colors and chose a resolution of 320×200, which provides a feeling accurate to the classic. Here’s a great image that accentuates the graphical differences between the original (on the left) and the remake (on the right) of KQII:

In addition to graphical changes, the entire plot for both King’s Quest 1 & 2 have been altered, and a music and speech pack have been created to enhance the experience. While still point-and-click adventures, allow me to make a short caveat: if you’re looking for creations true to their classics, look elsewhere; these remakes are refined products designed by modern standards.

Nintendo Revolution: The Facts

Joystiq reports what they know about the Nintendo Revolution. If what they say is credible, which I believe it is, then the Revolution might be the best new console. Here are the details:

Release is sometime in 2006.
Prototype shown is larger than final unit.
Nintendo is still determining final colors for the console.
All-Access Gaming, which refers to backwards compatibility to 20 years of Nintendo games, NES, SNES, N64. We don’t know particulars of how it’ll be accessed or what, if any, the cost structure might be.
Downloadable to 512MB of flash memory.
SD memory card slot.
Wireless controllers.
Two USB 2.0 ports.
Built-in WiFi.
WiFi used to interface with the DS.
DS likely to enhance future games.
Self-loading optical drive that will play 12cm Revolution discs and smaller GameCube discs
Self-contained attachment for playing media content, including DVDs.
No controller was shown. So even though the box looks a lot like the one leaked over the weekend, the accompanying controllers were not presented. So was it a leak, or a really good guess?

King’s Quest 9 Project Halted

Posted in Classics, Ethics, Fan-made media, PC Games by ubersoldat on October 26th, 2005.

After Vivendi Universal sent them a cease and desist letter, a fan-based group of developers were forced to stop all efforts of creating the ninth sequel to the King’s Quest series.

The legality of unofficial sequels is sometimes uncertain. It often depends on the extent to which intellectual property from the original game is included in the sequel. For example, if the sequel uses trade-marks from the original game such as the name of the game (or sometimes even the names of characters or places in the game), the sequel might violate trade-mark rights in the original game. Likewise, if the sequel uses any code, characters, or other materials from the original game, the sequel might violate copyright in the original game.

The developer’s site is www.kqix.com.
