Best Gaming Phone: Motorola RAZR V3C

Posted in Christmas, Gadgets, Hardware, Holidays, Reviews, Wireless by ubersoldat on December 16th, 2005.

These days, most people buy cell-phones for their secondary features, like call-waiting, speakerphone, text-messaging, picture-messaging, video-recording, and most popularily, video-gaming. But what is the best gaming cell phone? It’s not the Samsung “Blade” a900. It’s Motorola’s RAZR V3C, which now costs but a mere $99, after a $150 mail in rebate and 2 year Verizon Wireless Contract. It has a potpourri of features: “a 1.3 mp camera, bluetooth capabilities, EVDO technology, built in mp3 player, voice activited dialing, text messaging, picture caller ID, an external display with96 x 80 pixels and 4000 colours, the main colour display with 176×220 pixels and over 262,000 colours, speakerphone, alarm, calculator, calender, vibrate options, a phonebook capacity of 1000 entries, and a talktime of 180 minutes”. Plus it’s only 1/4 inch thick, and only weighs 3.45 ounces.

But enough about the basic features. The true genius of the RAZR lies in its capacity for video games. Totalling 82 Java-based games currently and plenty of top-notch titles like Elektra, Midnight Bowling, and Brother in Arms, the RAZR is the clear winner for video-game support. And for $99, this would be an ideal Christmas gift!

Are you Sure that the v3c has java games? because I think only the v3 has java, and the v3c is BREW based. I’ve been scouring the web trying to find a way to upload games to my v3c, and that is what I’ve found.

  2. KT says:

V3C plays java games. Pretty easy to put them on too. Do a Google search for game transfer to razr and there are tons of sites on how to and tons of sites on where to download thousands of games.

  3. Vic says:

Uh, wrong answer hotdog. The v3c plays brew games, not java. Do a little more research into what you are writing. Your starting to sound democrat. Bush won, no i’m sorry, Gore won, Uh no, no, Bush won..Come on, do some reading. And if your looking to buy this from verison, don’t. They crippled it so freaking much, you now have to pay for every feature that it is built for. I’ll skip on down to t mobile and get me a sidekick 2.

  4. Nevermind says:

Shut up Vic you son of a *****. Don’t be calling people hot dogs you Goddamn piece of ****. And don’t bring politics into this. V3m kicks ***, I don’t care what the **** you say, **** face.

  5. Thlayli says:

Wow, that was some serious aggression. Vic, you’re a twat. That’s all there is to it.

  6. YOU DUMBASSES says:

    You bunch of dumbasses

  7. Chris says:

Just to confirm… I own a V3c and I know for a fact that java won’t run on it. Trust me I have tried and tried again. It’s BREW only.

  8. matt says:

what games are there from start

  9. RemiX says:

Some canadian V3c play JAVA but US ones are BREW, mine for sure didnt come with any

  10. smartmind says:

hey guys why trying upload games on v3 better u get a psp :D
OR I SUGGEST U BUY NOKIA OR SONY ERICSSON PHONE

  11. CC says:

you can upload java games, you have to have the java app loader on, then it works,

  12. RyanNerd says:

Vic was pretty harsh, but before you go on about writing something you know nothing about, do some research. Verizon has significantly crippled the Razr, but there is an upside. This pissed so many people off that there are a ton of Razr hack sites. See links at bottom of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Razr

The Razr sucks for games. It uses Brew only and NOT Java. Hackers have not yet been able to crack the encryption used to tie a Brew game to a phone. I strongly disagree with the author of this web post. Do not get a Razr for anyone that likes games or music. Razr is the iPod of cell phones in that it is cool to have one. There are many many other phones that have more features and are easier to use. Just like there are tons of MP3 players that are better and have more features than an iPod. If you are getting a Razr as a gift for someone make sure that this person values staus symbols over features and ease of use.

As of when this article was posted, only Canadian V3Cs had Java on them. All US V3Cs had Brew.

Now, its Dec 13th, 2006. Sprint recently launched their own V3M with Java.
Its just a matter of time before anyone with a V3C can have Java on their phone, if they want it. It will just take a flash of the firmware. Of course the Canadian or Sprint firmwares would have to be leaked first. Currently there’s no way to rip the firmware from the phone. At least there’s no known way. But firmwares get leaked all the time…

Come see us @ motomodders.net Tell them phreakincool sent ya!

I have a V3c, and I don’t like it. My 710 had more features, louder volume, larger external screen, and I did not have to remove it from the clip in order to take pictures, or to recharge it. My Razr’s phone book entries are so large that it does not show 10 digits. And with 30mgb of space it limits videos to 15 secs. The Razr is supposed to be state of the art, tell me what state and what art. I bought it because I was told it was a better phone; lies. I agree with RyanNerd, status symbol phone only.

Sorry to burst your bubble there bobby boy, but I have a Canadian V3C and it runs –J A V A– so you might want to check where your getting your info. Mine is a Telus V3C. To unlock & access settings for telus only hit: ##TELUS quickly and enter unlock code: 527536 If this doesnt work for your then find it by using a seem editor and go to seem:0055 record:0001 bytes (h):007a and it will appear on the top line, line 000000. There are other I havnt fiddled with like ##DEBUG and so on, just search in the forums. Here is a great Motorola forum: http://www.howardforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=38

i hav a canadian v3c and it runs java games on it

  19. JM says:

Actually, BREW is just a software layer that runs on the cell-phone. Games may be written in a variety of computer languages (like C, C++, or Java) to run on BREW. So, in a way you can run Java games, it’s just that they need to be written to run with BREW.

  20. BP says:

i really think nobody here really knows for sure what is what. moral of the story, don’t buy the ******* v3c… v3m is considerably better.

  21. HA says:

I have a V3M and have hacked the **** out of it. But from what I have read at VARIOUS websites on the net, you CAN NOT get JAVA based games to work on a V3M in the US. They only use BREW games. And by BREW, it means that you PURCHASE the game and it works ONLY for the phone that you purchased it with. It’s much like the eeprom file on an Xbox. Each Xbox has it’s own unique eeprom that only works with it’s assigned hard drive and motherboard. BREW for the V3M is the same concept. So for those of you looking to get FREE games on your V3M… sorry to bust your bubble. It’s just NOT possible.

  22. PB says:

    To answer all:

The capabilities of the V3 series phones depends on the wireless carrier the phone was intended for. Verizon, Alltel, and US Cellular V3s (all variations) natively use Brew. This means downloading from the carrier and paying. AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile V3s use Java for games natively. This means that apps can be downloaded from the web and run as long as you find a compatible build. I do not know about V3 Razr phones for other carriers, but these are the major ones in the US.

Technically, anyone can hack their phones, given the time and knowledge. This would void any warranties (definitely) and may disable the phones ability to work on the out-of-the-box carrier (more than likely).

I have worked in the mobile game business for a while, and this is pretty much what it is. Hope this helps settle the debate.

  23. Mike Jones says:

If you have a Verizon V3c or V3m, load the Telus Firmware by flashing it. Telus V3c use JAVA, not BREW.

  24. d man says:

oh pls for game the best phone is a nokia ngage!! why do you think the new phones that *** out use the ngage application and they still dont have the power its like slow so throw ur stupid motarola away and dig out an ngage gosh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. Chris says:

    @ Vic…

you are very very very wrong and contradictory. Brew is the language used and supported buy some MOTORAZR’s to give the hardware of the phone instructions (FIRMWARE) and execute them…not to play games… the V3c uses the Java applet and language to play and write video games…

  26. Duh! says:

If this post was about VIDEOGAMES on cellphones its the Nokia N95 8gb… period. That was not even a question btw… best means, you know.. best ;P

  27. elliott says:

V3C alltell/verzion all run BREW only apps… but there is a guy who has cracked the BREW encryption. http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1293979&page=3&pp=15
