Half Life 2 Problems

Posted in PC Games, Hardware, First Person Shooter, Backwards Compatible by Elliott Back on November 2nd, 2005. [Del.icio.us]

I bought Half Life 2 the other day, and looked forward to blasting through the Lost Coast HDR demo, but I enountered some problems. See, there’s a known issue with certain video cards, namely the NVIDIA Geforce GO series (6200go, 6400go, and 6800go) where the game bluescreens when you try to load it. I tried all the solutions above and was able to run it with the -window flag, but to me that’s not good enough. You shouldn’t have to choose between inferior gameplay and the blue screen of death. So, to anyone with a new Sony Vaio, Half Life 2 or any other Steam/Source Engine game might not be for you.

Apparently tens of thousands of people all over the planet are having the same problems with this game, …and yet Valve has done NOTHING to help us out (no patch, or even an apology) - they just keep recommending that we reconfigure our entire computer to suit THEIR game???

…am I the only one who thinks that’s a huge crock of sh*t? Sure, the HALF-LIFE series has a great story and the best graphics - but if we CAN’T PLAY THE F%*ing thing - then what good is it?

    Valve - you SUCK!!!

Mark’s first reply works well, i had the same problem and it works now. Right click on the game in the steam window and select properties. Then click on ‘Set launch options’ and in the box, type ‘-windowed’ . Then put it back to full screen once in the game.

Do any of you also have brand new computers that use dual-core processors?

    My specs are:

System: Microsoft Windows XP, Media Center Edition, Version 2002, Service pack 2.
Computer model: Gateway DX300S, Intel ‘Pentium D’ CPU Processor 2.80 GHz (X2 = 5.6 GHz), 1.00 GB of RAM
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 6600 - 128 mb RAM

Despite having a new computer, with every upgrade (Direct X9c, newest video and audio drivers, etc) - along with all these apparent ’solutions’, I still cannot get the damn game to run without crashing!

I have tried everything that has been recommended by both; Valve forum members - as well as by the actual ADMIN at Valve, and STILL - nothing works! …I even set my system to only use ONE processor to run the game - and still no luck.

Why the hell couldn’t they make the game playable to everyone?

So much for Beta testing, huh?

While in the game press ESC and use the console.

In the console write “ai_disable” without the quotes.

I bought thegame Half-LIfe 2. this and tried to install it on one of my machines.
It did not install and only gave me the message that ” an error log was being created” !!!!!! CRAP !!!!!!”
I then tried to install in on another one of my machines.
This time it told me that it would not install because the
serial number had already been registered.
Yes, of course it been registered before, by me on
    the puked installation.
I have wasted a lot of time on their web site trying to get this fixed and of course they don’t answer emails or anything else.
As if this not bad enough, it has left over five gig of crap on my machine because their uninstall program really doesn’t (uninstall).
Now if this was not bad enough it turns out that most of this crap is advertising for some of their other games.
Talk about rubbing salt in someone wounds!!!
Is there any way that I can get this to work?
    Thanks

2nd, when ever theres an animated texture (like the one on the floor in the lab at the beginning” it just shows the blank white square where it should be.
3rd, when u head ANYone speak through speakers (like breen at the beginning on the huge screens) i cant hear what he says.

    Solution:
    In the console game type….:

    mat_dxlevel 90

and configure your video-texture in medium, in the game
    that is end….
now play hl2 in DX9 mode with FX5200 o higher
if the perforce is poor try : mat_dxlevel 70
    good luck

I’ve also been having some issues with Episode One but haven’t found anyone else who has this exact problem. I’ve had HL2 installed on my system for a long time and it runs great, I’ve got everything I need to run it and then some. I can also run Lost Coast, CS:Source and basically any other source game I’ve thrown at it.

However when I purchased EP1 a few weeks back I ran into a problem. It installs fine (far as I can tell), it gets all of the updates, tells me it’s “100%-Ready) but crashes when I try to open it. I don’t even get a black screen, it just thinks about it for a few seconds and then desides it doesn’t feel like it and Windows tells me that HL2.exe encountered an error had to close. I can still play all my other source games but not this one.

I was thinking that maybe something was wrong with the disk, though I doubt the instalation would complete if that were the case, so I tried installing it on a friends computer and it works like it’s supposed to. I know my computer isn’t lacking because I built both mine and his and I have tried a multitude of graphics settings but to no avail. This is the only game that has ever given me this much headache so if anyone had any idea it would be helpful.

    Thanks in advance

I have Geforce Fx5200, got problem with purple walls and no objects..

PIPO’s solution worked for me for fixing the wall textures.. dxlevel 90 is too heavy, but dxlevel 70 works, there are some glitches here and there though..

however the objects remain missing, but i have noticed that in the console it says ‘error vertex file for ‘(whatever object)’ not found’ for each object that is invisible..

NOW I DONT KNOW HOW TO FIX THAT THOUGH

but it might learn others how to..

  28. gonfou said:

    on August 15th, 2006 at 4:32 pm

    I figured it out…

I run episode one on a geforce fx5200..
it has a hardware directx level of 8.0
    My software dxlevel is 9.0
I have purple walls and invisible objects..

In the console I noticed a whole list with this line e.g.:
“error vertex file for ‘gibs/glass_shard01.mdl’ not found”

this line repeats itself for each mdl file of which the vertex file is not found, like healthkits, ammo,…

so i went to check on these mdl files in the hl2 map.. they are located in hl2\models. It seems that the vertex files of the mdl files mentioned are all called e.g. “glass_shard01.dx90.vtx” instead of just “glass_shard01.vtx”, implicating that they require directx level 9.0.

So I tried mat_dxlevel 90 in the console, like pipo said, and all the objects loaded perfectly. However, my graphics card can’t keep up.

changing the names of the vtx files didn’t work so far..

The only real solution I see is buying a graphics card that runs directx 9.0.

    It sucks

Valve should create a fix to make the models load in directx 8.0

  29. gonfou said:

    on August 15th, 2006 at 6:50 pm

I changed the filename “(object).dx90.vtx” to “(object).dx80.vtx” and it works !!!! the models load in directx 8.0 !!

god was I happy when that car appeared..

anyway it takes a long time to change all the file names so VALVE should fix this….

but this is the ultimate solution to the problem..

Twin Women in HL2 Nova Prospeckt level

For some reason a second version of Alex appeared alongside me in the area after she tells you to go ahead - she will help to open doors, etc from the control room (she communicates via the screens).

This other twin followed me wherever I went but didn’t help with fighting the combines - just followed me and generally got in my way. At the end of the stage where you set up the sentry guns in the control booth, the real Alex dropped through the ceiling, leaving me with two identiical twins! Now if only these were better circumstances…

The second twin didn’t reappear when the next level loaded and this strange event didn’t occur when I played HL2 for the first time.

I started playing HL2E1 and everything was fine. No problems with the loading or the picture or even the gameplay (altho the loading is pretty slow but that’s my computer).

I got to the level where you have to escort the troops past the combine through the courtyard, through the warehouse with the trains and into the moving train. THEN just as the last one gets onto the train and the game starts to load the next stage….nothing it crashes!! How do i get around this as i really want to finish the game??

    Someone help please!!

Hi, it has been awhile since Episode 1 came out, and I decided to download it and play it again, but Im getting that same error with missing vertex stuff.
Some transparent objects are simply invisible, like the car blocking the cliff ledge right at the beginning, or the bridge leading you inside the citadel once Dog tosses you across the gap…

I Had this problem before, and I remember it can be fixed by one simple command line argument, but I totally forget what it was :(
It was like -uselowdetailtextures or something along those lines… Does anyone know what im talking about?

It seems that this message board only contains problems, not any solutions. I’ve tried all the above mentioned techniques but to no avail.

If anyone have purple walls, lost med kits, ammo, car hanging over the cliff etc, try reinstalling hl2 ep1. I know it’s tedious, but it worked for me…
I remember walking near at the edge of the cliff where you supposed to “shoot” the car that blocks your way. I can’t even see that car, after that when the player and Alyx reached inside the catadel, I see more purple squares on the walls of the catadel. Open the console and it says I have missing textures. Initially what I try to do is replacing the texture files from the CD one by one. Guess what? It makes things worst…
Give it a try by reinstalling ep1, who knows it might work?? ;-)

    hello to all dx81 gamers,
i use a radeon9000 (ibm t41) which only support directx81. At the beginning I also didn’t see any items. Most of them were invisible. i took a look into the console and the console says there are some vertex files missing. So i put all available *dx80.vtx files from the HL2 deathmatch game (good to have one) into the HL2 episode one directory (hl2e1/hl2/models/) and now it works. now i can see most of the stuff. O.k., some items are still invisible, thats because these items don’t exist in my HL2 deathmatch game. But now it playable.
So I think it is a problem with the vertex files (vtx)

Wow, there seems to be a lot of problems with all of HL games.

Here are some possible solutions to some common problems:

“HL2E1: I CAN’T SEE ALL THE OBJECTS IN THE GAME!!”

I assume some of you downloaded *cough*pirated*cough* Half Life Versions. Well, this is usually not the best way to go for a game but if you did download HL2E1, there’s a torrent from PROViSiON for an Update of missing textures. If you use direct x 7/8 (on older cards), then you MUST have this update and replace/add the missing files/textures, otherwise it’ll be a pain in the ass to complete - even play - the game. If you are running through a genuine Steam account, just keep your game up to date and configure properly and install the newest drivers. I used to have an old geforce 4 card and I couldn’t see shit without the update. I know have a geforce go and since i know use directx9 I no longer need the update.

You can’t even run Half-Life? Try to always keep your drivers up to date. It’s the best way to get the halfbitch running. In my experience, I had a 64MB Nvidia Geforce 4 and even with that shitty card I could get HL2 and HL2E1 up and running, I just had to update my drivers because the game crashed early on an appartment scene.

Also, If you are a Geforce GO user (I have a geforce go 7400) and you have the infamous “failed to lock vertex buffer in CMeshDX8::LockVetexBuffer” error; a simple way to fix it is to update to directx 9.0c (on newer cards), if all fails, try to run your game with directx 8. just add the mat_dxlevel 81 to the console. My card supports directx9, yet it had this nasty lock vertex buffer bug, so i just tried to play using directx 8 and it works smoothly, although I had to sacrifice some visual options like Full HDR compatibility.

“the lady inside walks to the elevator the elevator comes up and then………..she doesnt move!!!!!”

Someone’s already answered this AI problem, just look in all of the comments. Another old dirty trick is to quickly save the game before she enters the elevator. Quit the game and return. Load the saved file and continue. If that doesn’t work, then use the ai disable command in the console. Look for the exact instructions in other posts.

Tenshihan, try running your ram at 2T, if you have it at 1T now. Battlefield 2 was causing me the same problems (crash to desktop) until I did that.

I’m still gonna download the demo on my other computer and see if it works there (it’s a newer one). Btw, the ‘-windowed’ command doesn’t work still crashes.

***THE BLACK MESA EAST BUG FIX***

I got stuck in that spot and searched my brains out for that. Even in here, there is no fix or nothing. Finally i started messing with the game and found a solution. Its simple really. Just go into the elevator press F6 wait one second and press F9 then. Its quick save and quick load. It works every time.

    Have fun!

    Alphaskull and Dreadlord:

This error means that your GRAPHIC CARD should support directx 8.0 technology, and have nothing to do with your installed directx 9 software. So this means that you should buy a new graphic card with greater directx support. :) Also I have heard, that if you set your compatibility-mode for the hl2.exe shortcut to windows 98/me, then you can overcome this problem. Try it out, and tell me if it works out for you guys. Best of luck!

I too am having issues with HL2, ep1 and ep2. I have an ATI 9600 Asus AGP card. When I first got HL2 2 years ago, it worked fine. But now when i have EP1 & 2, they always crash when i try to start the game. It loads to the option screen ok, but always crashes when a game is loaded/started. The strange thing is, I have exactly the same PC, motherboard, OS, video card, RAM as i did 2 years ago, so what the hell is going on??….and I am using an ATI card, the supposedly recommended card by Valve to play HL2. I have never ever had such issues with any game as I have had with HL2. I have even gone to the trouble of Buying a Nvidia card to eliminate a graphics card issue, Nup, no difference.
My message to the people at Valve/Steam is pull your fingers out and give us gamers some bloody solutions.!! We show faith by paying good money for the game, and Yes i did pay for it, (before all you “goody two shoe” anti piracy people flame me).
What must be done to get this damn frustrating game working!!???

As soon as i try to launch half life 2 it gets to the Valve screen and the credit screen afterwards, then it goes to the blurred cityscape screen, and it says loading at the bottom, a cursor appears in the centre and the loading dissapears and it just freezes there, i’ve left it for 5 mins and nothing, and the only way to get out is a complete reboot of my pc. My pc spec is:

    For people having :

“failed to lock index buffer in CMeshDX8::LockIndexBuffer”

    and

“failed to lock vertex buffer in CMeshDX8::LockVetexBuffer”

I had these errors a lot with Half-life 2 Episode 1. It has something to do with the game not being able to find the models for the DirectX mode you’re using.

Some warez (provision) version do not include al the textures for DirectX mode 7 and 8 (I don’t what causes it with legal copies).

Using the command -dxlevel 90 forces the game to stick to the DirectX 9 textures. Also if you have legal version maybe playing arround with -dxlevel 80 or -dxlevel 70 might help.

Also using 800×600 mode seem to make it better.
I also replaced the half-life_2_episode_1\hl2\models folder with the hl2\models folder of Half-life 2

When I make a shortcut and add the following commands to it:

-steam -game episodic -console -dxlevel 90 -autoconfigure -width 800 -height 600

At first the game runs and gives an error after a few second (internal driver error Direct3DDevice9), but after I restarted the computer the game works great.

This is an combination of solutions I found in this forum and the internet, so thanks to the people who posted those.

I’m not an expert, but maybe it will help someone…. Good luck!!

TO all those having issues with valve and the half life 2 series, I know, I’m still having problems with it but getting there, i can play the game, perfectly, but if anything else or updates foir win gets installed then i have to literally remove my ATI drivers and install again, CATALYST 7.7 for those who have the game crash right after the valve intro, and to others where they ccant see everythin or purple walls , UPDATE YOUR SYSTEM is the ONLY option and there is NO hotfix VALVE, STEAM, or WINDOWS can make to give you that.

There never was anything wrong with the cracked version of HL2.
Played back and forth several times over. Purchased it to play online and then all the crap started.
Moral of the story? Don’t buy Valve games. Just download cracked. Less grief and more play.

I have a Half-life 2 episode one installed on my pc. I had the same problem as lots of people mentioned above (I mean invisible objects). after reading this forum i concluded that with the help of replacing directx 9 files with directx 8’s (i’m using a geforce fx 5200) with a simple rename the problem would disapear. And i was approximaitely right! i renamed all mentioned files (of course with the help of a simple program) opened the game once more loaded my previous saved game. everything was right. but suddenly i was forced to leave the game with a runtime error!!!

Help please.. Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2 Episode 1 and 2 worked on my computer and then after a virus devastated my computer, i wiped the hard drive and put XP back on it, i currently have SP 2 and DirectX9.0c and now i cant play any of them. I’ve tried almost everything and still no solution. what would happen is that Half-Life 2 would start up from Steam, and go to the main menu, I would click on New Game and select a level[1st level], and it would load up and then it would show “Half-Life 2″ and then my computer would restart. I dont know what is wrong. I have a 256mb ATI Radeon X1050 graphics card, and an AMD Athlon 2800+ Processor running at 2.1GHz with 1.5 GB RAM and a Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Sound Card. can somebody please help me?? It shouldnt be the graphics card because they have the most recent drivers and movies run fine and some games like Far Cry and FEAR work.
