JC Penney Jacks Up Xbox 360 Prices

Posted in Backwards Compatible, Christmas, Hardware, Holidays, Shopping, Xbox 360 by ubersoldat on November 30th, 2005.

If you’re in desperate need of an Xbox 360, and by desperate I mean willing to fork out $800, then JC Penny is the answer to your problem. Retailers have been making money selling the Xbox 360 Premium Bundle at $400, so you can only imagine how much more JC Penny is making by hiking up the prices to twice of the “standard” retailer price.

Even though they’ve thrown in two bonus accessories (Play and Charge Kit and the Rechargeable Battery Pack), it’s not worth the egregious price hike. For $800, couldn’t they at least include a game?

Browser-Based FPS Utilizes Canvas-Tag Engine

Posted in Fan-made media, First Person Shooter, Online, Reviews by ubersoldat on November 28th, 2005.

Ben Joffe has developed the Canvascape “3D Walker”, which is the most simple FPS Engine in existence to date. 3D Walker utilizes the Canvas tag found in many internet browsers (ie: Firefox 1.5, Safari and Opera). Although the graphics are rather undeveloped, there’s no deption about the Canvascape “3D Walker”; all there is to do is walk around until you’ve become so bored that your over-a-decade-old GameBoy looks appealing.

Best Buy Manager Cons Xbox 360 Purchasers

Posted in Ethics, Hardware, Microsoft, Rumor, Xbox 360 by ubersoldat on November 28th, 2005.

KOIN News 6 of Portland, Oregon is reporting a Best Buy employee’s testimony concerning his store’s manager denying the sales of Xbox 360s unless an addition bundle of extraneous software was also purchased. According to the article, shoppers seeking to buy an Xbox 360 “were told the price would be different from what was advertised”. The manager allegedly told his employees that the advertised price ($299 or $399) was incorrect and that the real price would be several hundreds of dollars higher due to the forced addition of a software bundle to the mix.

The Best Buy employee who ratted out his boss only went by the alias “Chris”, who came forth because “Pretty much [...]I felt that what the company was doing was unfair, and I felt bad”. In response to these allegations, the Oregon Attorney General’s Office has opened a file on this debauchery.

Your Early Holiday Video-Game Gift Guide

Posted in Bargains, Christmas, Gift Guide, Holidays, Promotions, Reviews, Shopping by ubersoldat on November 28th, 2005.

Joy to Joystiq, the holiday gift guide has come! Here is the early list to give you a head’s up on a lot things that the kids will love this Christmas, but be sure to check back for our Official List in a few weeks.

+ Gamespot features a console specific list and is the most comprehensive gaming gift guide we’ve found. Their top game picks include RE4 (GC), Civilization IV (PC), Forza Motorsport (Xbox), God of War (PS2), Advance Wars (DS), Burnout Legends (PSP), and Nintendogs (DS).

+ Barnes & Noble contains their top picks on games from all platforms. We’re not quite sure about their logic since it’s a hodge podge of random games.

+ CNET has the goods broken down by affordable, midrange, and expensive prices. Toping the list are the GameCube, GBA, Micro, Xbox, DS, PS2, and ironically, the N-Gage. Looks like they just picked everything.

+ Gamestop’s guide is console specific citing top selling games. See also the now sister company EB Games guide as well.

My wishlist is a bit more convoluted than these, but they do a great job relating the most appealing trends and fashion in the age of electronic gaming.
